Local access only?

Hi folks,

I just moved into a new apartment where there is already wireless internet set up in my office. I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.

-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access.
-firewall is off.
-ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL.
-I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online.
-I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.

Please help!

One more thing:

This has happened to me before on a couple occasions with a wired connection as well, but has fixed itself after an hour or two each time. My current problem has been going on almost a week now and has yet to self-repair.

Hello moobird;

One possibility is that your Vista computer is expecting to connect to the old network at the old apartment and so is confused. It might help to make new connections for your new apartment. You could try using either the command prompt or the Vista Diagnostic Tools.

To use the command prompt, open an elevated command prompt like this:



With the network cable connected to you Vista computer, first type this:

ipconfig /flushdns

Then:

ipconfig /all release
ipconfig /all renew

It will take a minute or so, so don't be in a rush, but this should allow Vista to connect to the router again with a new connection.

You can also have Vista do most of this for you. The icon at the bottom right will open a menu to diagnose your connections, and to open the "Network and Sharing Center".



From there you can view and repair your local area connection.

I'm connected right now, but it's at everyone else's expense (I'm plugged directly into the modem, so nobody else can get on).

I did everything you asked, and have actually tried it all before (except the song and dance at the command prompt, but I've done it all previously at the ever-so-useless Network and Sharing Center). This is way beyond frustrating and I really have no idea what to do. I know everything I have works, it just apparently doesn't want to work together. I'm really not sure where to go from here.

OK Lets look at this ... connect back up to the router with the network cable and open the router's settings menu. Find the page with DHCP and capture a screen shot for me. I would like to see what address is being assigned to your computer by the router?

OK there are a couple things to try ... one is to reset the modem:



Also, I would suggest power off the modem, power off the computer ... then power on the modem, and power on the computer, in that order. In other words, power up the modem first, wait for it to boot up completely, then power up the computer connected via network cable.

Next I would like to know the models of network cards we are working with here ... two of them are connecting correctly and one is not? What OS are the other two computers?

Anything you can add might help.

I have another possibility for you. Open an elevated command prompt and type:
ipconfig /all

Then look for your network adapters MAC address (Physical address). It is 10 numbers / letters like:
09-00-34-60-EA-A8

If yours is all zeros: 00-00-00-00-00, this link may correct your issue:

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

"To resolve this issue yourself, disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start
type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
User Account Control permission
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Close Registry Editor.

By setting this registry key to 1, Windows Vista will first try to obtain an IP address by using the BROADCAST flag in DHCP Discover packets. If that fails, it will try to obtain an IP address without using the BROADCAST flag in DHCP Discover packets."

Now I'm afraid to mess with anything. Like I said, this has happened before, but never for a week or two at a time - usually for maybe an hour - is this just a Vista quirk or what?

You are very, very welcome ... although I don't know what I did? I might suggest you create a restore point here while things are working in case you loose it later?

These are the same kind of issues that drive my wife and me crazy. She comes home and says the car is making this noise and when we go to check it there is no noise any more? Is this a Vista Bug? Don't know until I know what is wrong. Hope it keeps working!
