Last chance...

Well, after just having to clean install Vista for the FOURTH() time since I got my new pc in November I am now close to admitting defeat and upgrading to XP. I've had nothing but trouble since I decided to take a chance on Vista 64, and with the latest issue (BSOD every time I tried to boot) I've decided to give this problem child one last chance to behave itself before reverting to XP.

Can anyone restore my faith in this OS? I initially wanted it so I could stream music and video to my Xbox but I've now reached the point where I don't care about this anymore and just want a system that will boot and work!:cry::cry:

Is there any "soon to be released update" news or other glimmer of hope that may make me persevere with it? I'm tired of being an involuntary beta-tester.

I have noticed you have 4gb of rams. So.....did you do the removal of 2 gb ram, install OS, download hotfix, reinstall the 2 gb ram song and dance that every one does? Lol!!

Sorry I did paid attention to this before I answer. You must had it working in some point. The problem doesn't seem to be OS problem. If you suspect it might be compatibility problem, you can wait a couple of weeks or so to see if SP1 would help.

Oh, you just do a search, there are tons of detail directions on the fix. Which as if you have more then 3 gb or ram you need to go through the hotfix proces. Good luck.

I had exactly the same problem, so ur only solution is to remove 2GB of RAM, do a clean install of x64, shut down, re-install the 2GB and I guarantee it will work...trust me.

Yeah all 4 gigs of ram appear to have been working. I suspect the issues are software compatibility problems rather than hardware. what's been happening is one program after another starts to fail then I get problems with installer packages not repairing/uninstalling/installing. Before my most recent format it was all Microsoft programs...Office 2003 and the Windows Live suite that were refusing to open/uninstall/repair/reinstall (also Nero 7, and my printer software). All had previously worked Then I did a Windows update, turned my pc off and the next day it wouldn't boot and gave me BSOD! I'm hoping SP1 will be a major improvement!

For now I'm not going to install the live suite and I'll just use Open Office. Since the MS programs seem to be habitual offenders I'll stick to open source freeware.

I just installed SP1 tonight ...runs like a wet dream:)
What a difference, much more stable, and fast as hell (well my comp. isn't exactly normal) compared to alot of folks out there...this is like luxury to them.

Thanks Matthews. I think I'm going to wait till a week or two after SP1 is officially released so I can read about any problems and solutions encountered (deja vu to XP SP2).

Glad you got yours working grimreaper. I'm not sure I have a ram problem (though I'm happy to be corrected), but it's amazing that so many people have had to jump through hoops to get theirs working. I bought Vista 64 so I could use 4gb of ram with a view to upgrading to more at a later date. If I'd had to do all that it would have been the final straw....back to XP!

Hahaha! Well so far I'm only reading good things about SP1 which I have to admit I didn't expect from MS! I think I'll give it a go at the weekend.

Since you have been doing so much install and uninstall, I would suggest you to run Aml Free Registry Cleaner before install SP1. The result will surprise you. Let us know how SP1 work for you. I still don't have SP1 yet; let me know if there an easy way to acquire it if you don't mind.

Well that was before my last format and I'd been using CCleaner to clear out junk too. I don't have it yet, I was just looking at how to get it and it looks like you can only enroll for the partner program with a company. I think I'll just wait till it's a general release.
