Laptop DVD drive not showing up...

Adamd

Hey guys!

My friend is having an issue long distance and can't see what's going on but is having a problem.

His DVD drive is not working.

What happens is that it is not showing up under "computer" and will not read any disks of course.

What does work is when we go to device manager it is listed, but has a yellow warning under it.

The drive did work before, but no longer does.

Any ideas? He really needs the help and I did everything I could...

Thanks in advance!

I am guessing that you have already tried updating the drivers?

Also tried to uninstall it from manager with no success...

Also tried to find a fix through windows and that did not help either...

I do not see them nor does he on either of our computers...

I did run this through with him before :(

Any other ideas or an updated way?

update the driver from winsxs folder

open device manager > right click on dvd drive > click on update driver software > select "Browse my computer for driver software" > Type/Browse c:\windows\winsxs > click next.

you might get this issue if the driver file is corrupted under system32
above mentioned step would install original (time you installed vista) driver from backup location.

Well I had him do that from above by just right clicking the drive and searched for the folder etc.

He reported back by it saying that the device was already installed...

This is driving me nuts because you think something as simple as a DVD drive that has been around for years and years would be an easy fix...
