First of all when did you buy laptop?
Second how do you know that CPU rangers between 60-100%?
We need to know this before any fix suggestion can be made ?

Hi,

The laptop is coming up for a year now. I have a gadget on the sidebar in vista that monitors the CPU usages,

In that case I suggest to open task manager and see what is chewing your CPU? It is a some kind of process that does it.
Are you using Vista CPU meter or added gadget? I have come across a couple of gadgets that were maxing out my CPU. ( Q6600)
Remove the gadget from the side bar, open task manager ( make sure that under options "HIDE WHEN MINIMISED" is selected) and minimise it to your task bar and keep an eye.
Otherwise try first option I suggested.

ok the ones that are using the most CPU usage are igfxsrvc.exe 45% and system Idle process at 40% is there any way to reduce this without having to keep closing them down in taskmanager? I am using the Vista gadget

System Idle process tells percentage how much of CPU is IDLE ( not doing anything)

igfxsrvc.exe

Igfxsrvc.exe is the tray icon that provides access to the user interface for Intel onboard graphics.
It's also available from Control Panel - Intel
Or just right click in the desktop and choose Graphics Properties. This is from another wed site "igfxsrvc.exe uses excessive system and memory resources with no corresponding benefit. Applications such as these should be disabled to improve overall system performance."
It is not critical IMO..... Maybe someone else may think different. IF you want you can disable it through msconfig and stop it from running

No.....
Actually you can but shutting down services that particular svchost is responsible for
If you do right hand click on svchost.exe and select go to services you will see what services that particular svchost is responsible for. I have 14 of them running....See below not a big issue, at least not for me Capture.JPG

AE look up is your Aero in Vista.... If you disable it Aero will not work.
Vista has different memory usage then XP. It will cache most frequently used files into the memory but it will it hand it over if needed for programmes that are memory hungry

Hi wizkid

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

Also known as: svchost.exe

Svchost.exe is a program that loads Windows services that are in the form of dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). It is possible for more than one svchost.exe to be running at one time, with more than one service being controlled by that process.

Hope that helps

Have a look here ...

Intel(r) Common User Interface

It looks as if this can be removed If you don't use it, have a look at the description and it would seem that disabling this would not cause any major system problems and so the best way would be to try and see if it effects the way you work.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

The CPU usage is fine now.

The ram usage is about 60% at idle in Vista on the laptop which has 2gb does this sound about normal or is there something that is using a lot of ram usage? I have disabled all the startup programs that I don't need.

Thanks,

Wizkid

Hi Wizkid,

Due to the way that Vista handles memory the amount of memory shown as used is a lot higher than on previous systems. I am currently showing 55% just running a browser so dependent on what else you run 60% is not too excessive. Of course this memory is only Borrowed by Superfetch and the vast majority is still available to your applications when needed

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

The only reason I asked again is because my laptop only supports 2gb max, so I wanted to check if there was anything else I could do, at least the memory will be available when needed.

Happy Christmas,

Regards,

Wizkid
