Key trouble - Reinstalling

I was going to re-install Vista using the upgrade disc by Microsoft
But when i checked the key at the bottom of my laptop, it is XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
But when i downloaded keyfinder.2.0.1 something like that
They key was different
What to do.
I am reinstalling what should i put in as a key?

Take a note of both.

I would use the one provided on the bottom of your PC.

Have you performed any anytime upgrades/activated via phone?

If in doubt try both.

I havent upgraded anything.
i got that disc when i bought my HP
it is microsoft disc not hps

Count yourself lucky.

Just pick one and put the other in a safe place.

So i have 2 keys
If i m re-installing vista back to vista, i can use the key that came when i bought this laptop
The 2nd key, back on my laptop, can i use that to upgrade to win 7....
I am clever i know,..... jk

No, the second key can only install a specific version of Vista (eg Vista Home Premium 32bit) and most certainly can't install Seven.

It is normal to have a different key on the HD with an oem preinstall.

You can't use the key off the HD , unless you also retrieve the activation cert that goes with it.

Exactly what I was about to say.

Use the Key which is on the sticker of your laptop.

If you are re installing make sure you install the one with SP2 in it.:D

That should save you the work of downloading SP2 via Windows Updates
