i just got a new laptop and it has vista obviously, but so did my old one and i could decide which programs (such as AIM) would stay running when my computer was in sleep mode, but now i don't remember how to do that.

Just to add... when your computer goes to sleep no programs are actually able to continue 'running'. Their (memory) state is suspended and they continue to run when your computer comes out of sleep. In sleep, just enough power is used to maintain the contents of memory.

I suppose it is possible that a single program (such as AIM) could detect when the computer is going to 'sleep' and decide to close down completely (a guess)?

I am very sorry about my previous statement!
I was clearly wrong and dont know what i was thinking.
When your computer sleeps all programs shut down. There is no way to keep the program running unless you just have the computer in STAND-BY mode.
Very sorry about original post.

ktannezz,
if your computer goes to sleep then you should still have all of your progreams that you had up running. There may be no internet connection (your drivers shut off) but as long as you dont shut your laptop all of your programs should stay running.

No worries - I kinda knew what you meant. I think the term 'running' is commonly used to mean (may be incorrectly) 'stay alive' in this instance, so hey.
