Kaspersky 2009

Hi, I just got done working on my Brothers PC, he had a Bad Sector on his HDD, and was missing his WIN 32 system files, a nightmare to fix, in this case. But I gt it done, Fixed the Bad Sectors, not with any MS app, but my own PC Utility Tools.

He runs XP PRO 32bit. Anyhow enough about that, lets just say, WIN XP, gave me a hard time. I was so Happy to get it fixed and back to VISTA, OMG!!

It's a Long story. So I'm not gonna go there.

Ok to the Meat and Potatoes of this post.

Originally he had taken his PC, that I built for him about 3 years ago, and it ran awesome for that long. Which is a Miracle considering his PC knowledge, Software etc.

The Kid at Best Buy said he had fixed it, no, he did not, he took out the HDD though and put it back with not screw one in it, that pi$$ed me off a lot!!
My Brother lives a couple Hours away, had he just brought it to me in the first place I'm sure I'd had far less issues repairing and saving his HDD.

So anyhow, he the kid from BB sold him RAM, he didn't need, I had install 2 GIG's of Kingston HyperX Ram, which is pretty much bullet proof, ram. He sold him the RAM when my Brother returned to tell him it still doesn't work (his PC) Scam two.

Scam one being selling him Kaspersky 2009 for 60 bucks plus tax.

Ok what do I want to know?

What do any of you guys think of Kaspersky 2009? Shawn anyone with some good understanding of this software. I have read a lot of good things about Kaspersky in the past, but don't know about it, on hands experience. Follow me?

To install or Return is the Question? Also if I do install it, on his RIG does Kaspersky 2009 charge an annual renewal FEE?? If so, I will not install it.

I'd rather he use McAffe that he can get absolutely FREE from Comcast,I've used it.
Myself, and it's a Good App, IMO, kinda to large foot print is why I don't anymore.

I use AntiVir Free edition that I customized to not POP up, and not ask me to Buy the full version ever. Works Great. Tiny Foot print. As well.

So, what do you guys know about Kaspersky 2009? Also does it require an annual renewal FEE?? :huh:

I use Kaspersky and am very happy with it, yes you do have to renew the license every year I buy the version licensed for 3 computers It is pretty much the same price as for a single license. ( you may have to search a bit to find a good price) It keeps me happy

It is however down to personal taste what you use If you are happy with McAffee then go for it

I cant say for where you are you will have to google for a price renewal is always cheaper

60 bucks would seem to be a lot though. I paid around €35 here and that for 3 licences

Yeah, Ill look around my guess is I can find it at the EGG or Amazon for like 20

bucks. Amazon for sure. However anyway you look at it FREE is BEST, IMO.

Comcast gives it's customers the FULL version of McAfee, and no charge for as

many PC's you may hook up, AFAIK. I like McAfee just fine, but I like AntiVir the

most. AVG, I can't stand. It was great at one time, now, meh

Kaspersky, admittedly is a great app. no doubt in my mind.

Always go to manufacturer, like Kasperskys US site Antivirus Software & Anti-Spyware Solutions - Kaspersky Lab at the bottom they link to "official" stores. Those price cuts they seem to have now might only be avail. online. Dont expect shops to change price tag.

Dont know if they cheated him, depends on which product he bought.

Compare Kaspersky Antivirus & Internet Security Programs - Kaspersky Lab show why you really need to imagine a need for especially leak-stopping firewall to get their suite. Thanks to price cuts not much money to save though.

Kaspersky renewal cost like a new product minus 30% - all done from inside program, links to relevant country specific estore. Any question will be answered in their many FAQ/Support pages. Kaspersky as a website/product is very slick but not for free

Btw, new free Avira 9 do not pop up after update Ive read. Now only after manual scanning. Also it now protects against some Adware/Spyware - but does not have "Enhanced adware/spyware" protection. Have no idea what that means. Well you might have to restore old fix and find new to take care of popup.

OEM most likely mean you only get download but I got the same with I bought Kaspersky 2 years ago. Same with other "download" buys. Then they send serial code in an email. So same thing. No use for box, manual anyway. There are no extra valuable gadgets connected with this buy.

Dont know if special OEM license has restrictions as to renewals. Does not really matter, still a lot cheaper. Can only find this about OEM on their site, not checked forum Service messages not too concerning.

There are scams just like this you know. Selling legit products with fake serial codes because they have no agreement with maker/distributor. They could sell it for 5$ and still be laughing. This is a very good site for this kind of thing if that is the case. With all these top brands they are begging to be shut down if something is screwy. Microsoft, Adobe, Apple etc. wont just watch and lose money.

A minimum guarantee you can use credit card. I have checked site with Siteadvisor, WOT, Norton. No concerns.

I like my FREE Edition of AntiVir really, works fine for me. I have routers etc., as

well to deter Viruses. Vista Firewall, is it not ok? Seems silly to have two Firewalls,

IMO. I like things as Simple as Possible. I do appreciate you guys taking your time

with this, I will make some sort of decision soon enough.

Suite being that much different depend on product. Dont think it make Kaspersky go from light to heavy.

Good idea to get all features in 1 product. You know it will work, is easy to handle. Dont know about Kaspersky, might need some setup but something like Norton Internet Security 2009 is definitely for everyone - why many love it, they are able to compute without much effort. Those who like to tinker might not be so overwhelmed. About Kaspersky I would think at least 1 person should know all settings, make necessary changes, then lock them down. Protect brother from himself and Kaspersky. Program can send you an email when it detects something.

With these prices why bother with freeware but there are free firewalls etc. Check this forum Wilders Security Forums - Powered by vBulletin and perhaps this product Free Firewall Antivirus Software Download by Comodo - very powerful and you dont have to install AV. Can keep using whatever, disable during install.

I could not care less for "better" firewall - whole argument for need is flawed I think. I cant remember anyone going "weeee my 2 way firewall told me I was infected, Im so happy all other shields failed - Im dumb enough to get infected but I sure do pay attention to my "better" firewall - great infection did not disable it as they often do... - so what do I do now?" To prove purpose, and that is easy, you have to setup a fake scenario, like "leak" tests. Must be paid by firewall makers. But thats me, router plus MS firewall will do. Microsoft have made it hard to use Vista firewall as a 2 way firewall (it is 2 way) because they know only few can be bothered to learn. Will create chaos and zero, if not negative, impact on security. Just look at UAC, about same powers at work. Stuff like Norton survive by being almost full automatic. If a firewall or other tool, like Comodos Defense+, requires constant maintenance and awareness expect many to go BAH.

There are 3 reasons for 2 way firewall. 1. To pad paranoia on the back or to feel secure like advertising promise, 2. To play with it and 3. To keep cracked programs from calling home. Last one should not be underestimated.

I try to focus on what has a purpose I can understand and know works effectively. Like OpenDNS, WOT Internet Security | WOT Web of Trust If no trust in brother installing WOT could be best help for him. Will prevent or warn him from going to sites where unaware people get infected. Is way faster and more aggressive than Google/MS/Norton/Mcafee. Can add Avira as well, their WebGuard is not of much use with what WOT does - I hope they buy WOT. OpenDNS is still wondering on how to block such sites, they should and can but wont. Install WOT in both ie/firefox, is not system wide protection but still effective unless he ignore or disable.

Passwords, codes I keep locked and encrypted with Keepass Features - KeePass Here some will go BAH but what would I see if I stole your computer tomorrow? Forget about little malware attacks, this is potentially more about your life Another advantage is this has forced me to dump the stupid idea of using same or similar pwords for sites, like Google, MS. If one of my accounts are cracked it will only be that one. There is a problem with browsers auto-login which most use. I do as well but should not since it defeat the purpose of Keepass. There are ways around that, like disable... Also other tools for secure logins. This is 100 times more important than 2 way firewall or not. While Keepass is nice it is not needed as such, just an ugly highly paranoid program - what is needed is control/awareness over important info. Same with backups or evaluating what information/files are to locked away from humanity. If you do the annoying password thing rest will come easy.

I do use Avira Premium but could do without AV. Not sure why I bought it, impulse and cheap price I would think. Difference to free version has become less with vers. 9. Still think Avast is a bit better overall, as a free AV. They plan to expand on WebShield which Avira does not have, have read some good things about coming Avast 5. Have used Avast for 5-6 years, may be more - many stupid family members does it still because they cant seem to mess it up I used Kaspersky for 2 years, got fatter and fatter but also does a lot more than Avira.

In dark past I had like 100 crack sites in bookmarks. Strange how dangers have gone away since dumping that hobby. Dangers come from risky sources, everyone knows where that is. Well stay clear then - problem solved. Rest of invisible dangers, like crappy domains trying to infect computer, WOT and partly OpenDNS, ms/firefox/google take care of. Not really complicated.

Dont forget you also have Windows Defender monitoring. Not going to mention UAC. Advantage of staying away from big packages is that free stuff like Avira, Avast, AVG dont mind Defender. Many payware products disable, or highly suggest to disable, but do they catch same infections? Avira claims there is no use for Defender with Premium package, only cause problems. Will take few minutes to prove them wrong, way too easy actually. Causing problems might be true though, like 2 software firewalls is never a good idea. Sometimes even a router firewall cant work well with 1 software.

I think Defender hate is part of a battle of our money. Later this year Microsoft will release free Antivirus. Already got Antispyware/firewall covered. Im sure AV will at least on level with average = whole market could go to hell. So 3rd party makers need to position themself against threat. Why Avira or other company should buy WOT. Full speed on "internet" protection. You cant scan files in 25 different ways, a few percentages difference in hits dont mean a thing. They must be creative or people will just use MS. IE8 is here as well. Less and less reason to think out of the box. Throwing in more and more gadgets like virtual keyb, "child protection" is another way. Monitoring and letting you control every detail down to single file level like Comodo does/can is another.

Should you find it necessary to use certain files then first check them at VirusTotal VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan Most important tool for this, more important than getting "best" AV. The more you upload the more you will realize software is not close to 100% guarantee. Sometimes it works.

Forgot about browsers. Some like to lock them down, "harden" them - especially Firefox because it is possible. You heard of NoScript? As silly and useful as 2 way firewall, almost on level with "cookie control" Assuming every site is potentially harmful is BS. I can tell you what the purpose is - same as with "private" browsing. Sometimes you visit sites you know are "bad" but you sorta like them anyway, hmm.

i dont recommend norton sceruity to anyone...
i had virus on my pc it never picked up so how lame is that programme as for kaspersky i think it the dog b*lls to be honest it lets you know and blocks every littlk thing that should not be touching your laptop but thats just my thought on the matter as i being down that raod with norton and avg they both poo if you ask me i would not recommed them to anyone thanks
and kaspersky got anit malware bit on it which is handy

I dont like Norton that much either but they have improved with 2009 versions. Any idiot can use them which is good since Norton is everywhere. Norton wont go away so world is a safer place with better Norton

Well try use VirusTotal some more - Kaspersky will eventually miss something. Does not necessarily mean infection if you activated file because program can have other tools to kick in but still.

Only way you can trust a program close to 100% is if you set up system monitoring monsters like Comodo package to warn and prompt like there is no tomorrow. Then you can be notified and aware no matter what is going on/in/out. Tools might have huge databases of known "good" programs, taking care of you, but not good enough. Even Windows Defender does that. Everything must be manually approved by you. Have fun.

Since all suck to some degree your feeling of what suits you best matters - so avoid AVG, Norton and go Kaspersky. Avast has not won many gold medals in pure detection races but I value other things as high or higher. One being I like their support and the way product seems to be heading. Does not mean free Avira is not better in races - with what it does.

I don't know why you keep pushing that "buy from the manufacturer" line??? I've already proved that wrong once. It doesn't take much to Google and find a better price than what the manufacture offers on most Virus software, Kaspersky, Norton, McAfee ...and places like Amazon.com will almost alway beat the manufacture's price. And since were talking online anyway (these manufactures are online), why not go elswhere for cheaper prices???

Buy the cheapest (legit) place of course, but be aware of what you buy and if doubt, and in case actually, check with manufacturer. What is wrong with that? Cant be either correct or not, just needed check.

With regards to Norton as in your first "proof" that can actually matter because they have different licenses for same product. Check those links he posted in post no. 1. "1 Year Protection: With this service, you receive the right to use this product on one PC or on the specified number of PCs during the service period" nice except they dont inform the specified number of pcs for the AV product but they do for the other - there is reason to doubt I think. Go to Symantec site and get facts of what to expect from retail purchase. Dont get screwed by whatever shop because they and you dont know any better is the message. I thought that was clear.

Trinity is even cheaper btw but not as authorized as Amazon dealers I guess... Amazon would not have fake resellers would they? Why save on the links? There are many ways to obtain software. At Amazon you can also get the wrong package, so check around there as well. Unless I know who I talk to and who I link I will go by retail price and original sources. Does not mean there are no other ways as you can also see from this thread.
