Well I've been able to get this stupid MSI P6N Diamond MB to run okay but just getting fustraited over the way it would act up.

Anyway I ended up going shopping and now have a Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition Processor, GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P 1366 X58 MB and 12 gigs of CORSAIR DOMINATOR (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 on the way. Hopefully I will die before I ever need to upgrade anything else.

Now my new system will be:

• CoolerMaster Stacker Case ST101

• Ultra X3 1000w Modular PSU

• Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition Processor

• Cooler Master V8 CPU Heat sink and fan

• GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P 1366 X58 MB

• 12 gigs of CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

• 2 WD10EADS SATA 1T Green Drives ( the new 3 platter drives)

• Seagate 7200.11 SATA 1T Drive

• 1 CD/DVD Burner with Lightscribe SATA

• 1 BluRay Burnewr SATA

• Sapphire 4870x2 2 gig vid card

• Hauppauge 1800 DVR TV card PCI-ex1

Well with upping the memory, figured 12 would be better than 6 for x64 systems now the PSU calculator says I will need 566W so still less than my PSU. Only other thing I wonder is is Vista smart enough that I can just move the HD's from my current sytem or should I expect that I'll have to reformat and reinstall Vista x64

It "should" work, but it will take time to detect and install all the devices and drivers on first boot.

Although, when changing the system is always suggested to reinstall to avoid conflicts.
Like with drivers, for example.

Probably best to do a reinstall. Fortunatly I havent activated either OS yet so at least I shouldn't have to call MS.

Someone on another board suggested I set up 2 drives as a raid setup but I've never even understood what a Raid setup is good for. Could someone enlighten me?

When you have more than one SATA driver of the same size, you could make the work as "one" bigger drive, or mirror the information... etc. (depending on RAID mode).

For performance, make the drives work as one (with the size of both) will make the unit to have higher transfer rates.

Sheesh, how things have changed. I was so scared about installing my new CPU onto my new MB. My hands are a little shaky and once in the past when I was doing an upgrade I actually did bend some pins. At what I paid for the I7 I was deathly afraid I might screw up a pin again. Imagine my suprise that the I7 doesnt have "Pins". I made sure I had the arrows aligned and there were also guides on the side of the cpu socket so it was a piece of cake compared to old type cpu's.

Have a feeling installing the dang Cool Masters V8 cooler will be more of a challenge
