It's 2010.. and I still can't get SP1 to install!

1.Try reregister WU components How do I reset Windows Update components?
2.Try reregister WU libraries Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club
3.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin)
and type:

sfc /scannow

4.Run Readiness Tool Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

If still no success prepare raport from SFC command;

again run cmd.exe and type:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

On your desktop appear sfcdeteails.txt file, find also CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. Both sfcdetails.txt and CheckSur.log files attache to post.

Yor CheckSur.log is OK but sfcdetails.txt reports some issues:

As you can see log report unable to fix C:\Windows\System32\licensing\ppdlic\explorer-ppdlic.xrm-ms and C:\Windows\System32\tcpmon.ini files
In my opinion the first one file is very important.

1.Download attached files and unpack anywhere
2.Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\licensing\ppdlic folder ,find explorer-ppdlic.xrm-ms and takewnership this file

//see here how to do that:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html

3.Rename explorer-ppdlic.xrm-ms to explorer-ppdlic.old and next place into C:\Windows\System32\licensing\ppdlic folder my explorer-ppdlic.xrm-ms file which I gave you with archive attached to post

4.Replace tcpmon.ini with my file -the same procedure like for previous file, only one warning:tcpmon.ini is located in C:\Windows\System32

5.When both files are already replaced restart computer and try install SP again

My Computer

I was afraid of that.

I would have tried that long ago myself, but my laptop shipped without a Vista disc.

If there is truly no other option, looks like a Windows7 install is in my not-so-distant future.

Prepare log from VistaSysInfoTool http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/176785-vistaforums-sysinfo-tool.html
but I can't promose it help you to solve your problem

Unfortunatelly upgrade to Win7 without loosing programs and data require at least SP1 too

My Computer

I did all what you suggested but it did not work.

I can't get SP1 to install because it is not offered in Windows Updates.
Please find attached the two files sfcdetails.txt and CheckSUR.log
Any suggestion?
Thanks

I'd get myself a copy of Windows Vista OS SP2, or search for an ISO online and re-install with SP2 pre-installed.

Doing those two updates if you download and install will take a lot of time, time better spend downloading the ISO and re-installing Vista.

Then you won't have this trouble again, if you ever re-install.

You can't do this.
His key will most likely not work for the newer version of Vista, Keys are changed according to the versions.

Once the files are d/l'd he has them an won't need to d/l every time. So why not.

Plus d/ling the files is most likely illegal, cracked or not, as its from a non-microsoft approved source.

I had an OEM first time copy of Vista without any service packs from Gateway.

I found a Retail WIndows Vista SP2 copy, use its several times to re-install Vista, before I learned about imaging.

It never activated online, had to do a simple robo call to Microsoft, enter some keys and was up and running in minutes.

Its a time savor, if user ever had a problem in the future and needed to re-install some problem would occur and several hours of updates is not reasonable; at least for me.

I found some OK sites that hosted those ISO, not torrent or RS. Same with Windows 7 for users that don't have an installation disc, Digital River hosts some ISO's and I don't believe their illegal.

There not tracked or broken.

Last I knew, his key will not work on an SP1 or SP2 disk, so he'll be using a cracked version to activate it.

If its a retail explain how its cracked?? Would only be if you added some kind of crack or fake serial whatever the case is.

If you never tried it then you can't really comment on it. I done this several times, when I had to install Vista. It's a retail disk meaning there's no crack or anything like that.

People bring me the labtops or PC's for fixing, I just wipe the drive reinstall and use their key. The same you say goes for Windows 7, when computers are pre-installed with the OS and no installation. If you mess with the recovery partition, then your best bet is to find another disk.

Would you just spend another hundreds of dollars on another OS with new key?

This is now off topic and I'm done discussing it.
