Issue with Security Center

Hi there, all; first post in these forums. :D

Now. Two days ago, a Trojan got into my computer and latched itself onto Internet Explorer and the security center, posing as a security alert for Vista. I was able to open up the main virus scanner I use (AVG free edition) and root out the Trojan, isolate it, and destroy it.

The only problem is that it seems to have corrupted the security center and done other things, too. Whenever I try and open up a program normally, I get the "Chose the program you want to use to open this file" screen, with IE as the only option (even if I'm trying to open IE) unless I select the Run As Administrator tab. Windows Defender is turned off, too, and its alert says "contact your system admin to enable Windows Defender via group policy".

I thought I should post this here, because it seems to be primarily be a problem with the security of the computer. Ever since removing the Trojan the computer slows down and eventually freezes when it is connected to the Internet. Is there anything I can do, or do I have to reinstall Vista (which I'm unsure about, because my laptop came with Vista pre-installed and the Vista disc I have belongs to someone else)?

Have you tried a System Restore point to just before you got the Trojan ?

Yes, I've tried that. Whenever I try to reload I get a notice saying "there are errors on C:\ drive" (or a notice to that effect) and regardless of the prompts that it takes me through to try and correct them, the same notice keeps on popping up.

Hello, try to use Malwarebytes. It's a free program, and works great, also, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is way better than AVG. My dad use to use AVG, and it DOES NOT stop viruses from installing on your computer, it also to my knowledge DOES NOT use real time protection, all it does is scan, so if you're connected to the internet, your really vulnerable to viruses. He switched to Avast antivirus, which works good, but is a little more complex than MSE.

Try to do a repair install of Windows if these problems persist, and if you need anymore help, please do not hesitate to ask.

My bet would be the trojan is still around. AVG is completely useless. Follow the advice of Snow. If that does not work, save your data (but scan it) and reinstall.
