I try to change my computer product key with windows 8 pre-installed, somehow when I try to input the product key of windows 8.1 of my friend computer doesn't work, it says invalid key.

Notice:

My windows 8 and not windows 8 pro, my friend computer with windows 8.1 no professional version also.

Again my question Is windows 8 using different product key from windows 8.1 when you buy a new computer?

Thanks.

Re: Is windows 8 using different product key from windows 8.1 when you buy a new comp

You cannot re use a key from another installation of windows, even if the installations are of the same version, it is strictly one install per key, (except for certain volume licences which are only available to business users). The keys used for windows 8 and 8.1 are not compatible

If you are running a valid windows 8 you should be able to upgrade to windows 8.1 for free from the Windows store, ( this is a recommended upgrade as 8.1 corrects several issue with windows 8 ), upgrading to windows 8.1 will also allow you to upgrade to windows 10 for free, (available for free for one year from release), when it is released at the end of July this year

Thanks Barman55,

I know that volume licences key can activate as many computer as you want only for corporate company company connected to key management installed on a server I do believe that's what they call.

Anyway is that means using a retail product key can not activate windows right?

You need to use a key designed for the version you have, If you have windows 8 you cannot use a Windows 8.1 key for activation
