I've been unable to use my laptop since September. Whenever I logon it immediately gives me a BSOD. At first it was PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. I don't know why it changed to this current one. The only way I can use the laptop is in Safe Mode. I've been using my work laptop ever since. In installed a little program call WhoCrashed that gives me a dump analysis. It says the crash is caused by ntkrpamp.exe and ntkrnlpa.exe. Can anyone please help me with this? I really want to start using my own laptop again.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720
Vista Home Premium 32 bit

Thank you, anyone, who can help me!

The first problem is due to some application or software trying to address the wrong memory reserved for it.

When this problem occurred, had you installed any new software or drivers? You might check Device Manager to see if there are any problems with hardware.

Since you haven't used that computer since the problem occurred, you should be able to do a System Restore. have you tried that.

When you get a BSOD, the error shown at the top of the page, such as the one you mentioned, is generic. Normally, the offender is shown near the bottom of the screen. You might take a look at that. You might also download bluescreenviewer and run it. It gives details about the cause of BSODs.

Hello Pabmw6,

IRQL_Driver_not_less_or_equal error indicates a driver tried to access a certain area of memory when it should not have, meaning there is a flaw in the driver itself. The goal of troubleshooting is to find that driver and either disable or replace it. In this case it is volsnap.sys (an OS file) is the cause.

Try running the sfc /scannow and also run CheckDisk so we can rule out corruption as much as possible.

For more details please refer the following articles:
-- BSOD Help - IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x000000D1
-- Windows 7 - volsnap.sys BSOD

Hope that helps!

Sorry for taking so long getting back here. I was having some issues logging into the forum and had to get divine intervention from Forum Support.

Wither 3: When I got the first error I did a system restore to a previous month but still had the problem. Then I ran McAfee to see if the pc was infected. I started it running and left for several hours. When I returned it was still running! It was a about 98% done so I let it complete. It was right after that when I got the second error. I was so busy at that time with work I decided not to mess with it until I did have more time. I did run BlueScreenView on the 22nd. The Minidump has five files highlighted - CLASSP NP.SYS, fltmgr.sys, hal.dll, ntkrnlpa.exe, partmgr.sys.

Allan D: I will run the scannow and CheckDisk tomorrow and let you know what it says. Right now I'm too tired to try anything.

Sunday (2/24) I read somewhere to run msconfig, on the Services tab check Hide all Microsoft services then click the Disable All button, then on the Startup tab disable all, restart the computer then one at a time add back to see if something causes the BSOD again. I disabled everything and was able to boot normally. It took a long time but I figured out McAfee caused the BSOD to error again. I disabled them and it booted normally and then shut it down for a few days. Tonight it wouldn't boot normally, it gave me a weird pop up error but I don't remember what it said. I did a reboot and it went straight into Safe Mode.

Thank you both for your help!

Hello Pabmw6,

I would definitely wait to get the results from you. As Townsbg has said, I would also recommend you to run the hardware diagnostics test on the system provided by the manufacturer. Please mention the system make and model number.

Good Morning!

I ran the scannow, Dell's diagnostics and CheckDisk. Everything passed. Dell gave me a list of drivers to update (42 recommended) that I have downloaded. I ran the BIOS 1720_A09 and the Chipset R141246 but haven't ran the others. I'm concerned that I should be doing these in a certain order but I don't know what order. Also, Saturday I downloaded MalwareBytes, ran it and it found this - Trojan.downloader:Weather-Install.exe. Which it removed. I frequently get a pop-up saying Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed. I looked in the Event Viewer and it always says the faulty aplication is svchost.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, faulting module unknown. It gives a time stamp and other information. And, I'm unable to use the Windows Update (thewindow pops up but is blank and the hour glass just keeps spinning), the Audio Service won't run, and some other stuff that I don't remember right off hand. I'm running late for work and will try again tonight. Thank you all for your help. I appreciate it so much!

I know what it shows but sometimes it helps to restart it. I'm going by memory in thinking that it affects the svchost.
