iPhone update problems

Every time I try to update my iPod/iPhone with new software, I get a message after about an hour that my network connection has timed out. I am not trying to install the update wirelessly and I disable the Norton firewall and antivirus software before beginning. As well, I get the following problem report.. Can anyone help?

there might be a problem with the update. If it tiimes out after an hour, it has been trying to install it unsuccesfully for that time. An update should take maybe 10 minutes. Could you tell us about your computer and network setup?

I'm on a Compaq Presario A931NR. I work from home and am the administrator. I also have a 2Wire Wireless Gateway router with modem. When I try to do the download, I am disabling antivirus and firewall and I am not doing the download wirelessly. After multiple tries, I was able to download the 3.0 software for my iPod touch. Now that I am trying to download the newest software for my iPhone, I am experiencing the same problems.
