When I put a card into my media reader, autoplay opens asking which program to view the pics with. As I don't want to use the existing programs, how can I add a app to the list?

Thanks. I'll give it a try when I'm feeling adventurous. Vista has been a real bummer for me and I have to really get my courage up before I try any tweaks.

A good policy - and I'd also recommend you make a restore point before yoy do anything so you can go back if something doesn't go as planned
