Are you doing a new install or an upgrade? I've seen upgrade installs take forever (or fail miserably) when Vista tries to rebuild the application catalog, especially if you have a bunch of older applications on your XP install. The new WIM install process does things a lot differently than it's predecessors.

One other thing you might try is unplugging all of your USB peripherals before tryng the install (i.e. drives, game pads, printers, scanners, etc)? My first attempt to install Vista hung when I think it was trying to locate/install drivers for an old scanner. After I unplugged all my USB devices the install worked fine. Once I plugged everything back in, Vista found appropriate drivers for everything but the scanner using Windows Update (FWIW - the XP ones ended up working just fine).

Of course, having the correct drivers you need on hand ahead of time would definitely be the preferred way to go.

The key is to unplug all non-standard hard such as Printers, Scanner, USB Devices, Firewire Ports, etc.

My Vista Ultimate x64 installed in 19 minutes.
