Indexing over kill?

Hi,
I wonder if I am indexing too many folders. When I look at Control > Indexing Options > Modify > Advanced > Show all locations, all of the C: disk is indexed. It seems to me that only those folders that I search often should be indexed. That would limit the indices to documents, pictures and music folders. I have read "How to Use the Indexing Options in Vista" Published by Brink 10 Jun 2007 and I think I understand it. Should I return the indices to their default settings and then just index folders that I use a lot?
Thanks

I turn off indexing altogether and use Everything Search. It's a free search program exclusively for NTFS file system. The reason is it searches the MFT file structures instead of indexing. You can choose which drives to search. It also has an Exclude list.

Everything 1.2.1.451 Alpha / 1.21 Final Download - Freeware Files.com - Utilities Category

Get the 451 alpha. It's apparently the last one the author is going to publish. I've been using it for years. It's quite stable and has better implementation than the "stable" version.

Thanks for the reply MilesAhead,
I chose to "Restore Your Index to Original Settings". Thereby reducing the items indexed from 89,694 to 26,514. I no longer have the entire C: disk indexed. just Offline Files, Start Menu and Users.

If your Vista has a Service Pack you should be ok. My first Vista machine was pre-SP1 and all it did was run the HD on so it was nearly unusable. I got another with SP1 and the default settings were like 95% of what I did by hand on the first Vista PC. W7 I hear the indexing is better. But I like to set up so machines are the same. Except for new features I like such as Jump List. So I use Everything on everything. :)
