Incessant Disk Thrashing!! Sys Vol Info....

Vista is known for excessive disk activity, most of it unnecessary. Windows ME, Windows XP, and Windows 7 use System Restore and similar programs, yet these are not as disk active as Vista. I despise this OS!

Anyway, is there a way to stop or decrease the multi-daily System Volume Information crud that goes on, and on, and on..... My Process Explorer shows this to be the culprit, and my scheduled defrag is off, no antivirus program scanning, or indexing active. I read somewhere that there was a way to stop or diminish the Sys Vol activity. Help please! Thanks.

May slow down searches however.

Volume may be shadow copies, but should not go on constantly.

Hello & welcome,

First, please be more specific regarding which process is "Hogging" your processing power.

Look in task manager & identify which proccess is causing the issue.

Also, please state you PC manufacturer, model, spec & update status (SP2 plus) etc. etc. This will help us to help you.

See if you can turn off indexing

As I posted, I have turned off Indexing. It never runs. I suppose I could turn OFF my System Restore function, but not a good idea. There has to be some way to limit the Sys Vol activity!!

Why can't I remember what I read about cutting it down!!!

Thanks to all for helping out -- with my Vista's disk activity. And no, it's not Superfetch, or anything other than System Volume Information building. This is normal and all/most Vista users experience it, though they don't complain like me! But I want my hard drive to last a little longer....

To Lottiemansion, as I wrote, I found that Sys Vol Info was the culprit, as shown in Process Explorer. And this happens on every Vista computer I've ever used, inluding both my updated Dells.

Thanks to all for helping, but I suppose there is no answer except to accept the thrashing, or move up and use my Windows XP or Win 7 computers, while saving money for hard drives for my Vista systems!

"All vista users" is a sweeping statement I don't have a lot of disc thrashing so I don't know what you are talking about.

Sorry dude. If you have Vista, you DO have a lot of disk activity, whether you realize it or not. Of course, "a lot" is a subjective term. In any case, there's more disk activity in Vista than in XP or Win 7. And that's "only the facts, maam!"

If you run your system how it came out of the box you will get a lot of activity
But if you go to services.msc and turn off (set to manual) what you don't use it will stop
Main ones I turn off are Indexing and Search.There are a lot you can disable
