Images, webmail, and website not working

This started 3 days ago. Some emails in gmail would not display images, some links from emails would not open, hotmail opened with plain text, Facebook opened in plain text. I have my laptop networked to my desktop and this occured on both PCs and in all browsers, IE8, Chrome, and Firefox. Only Firefox would and does open Facebook to my homepage and display profile pics but it will not display imgs from apps and will not open any apps.

Desktop is Vista Home Premium 32bit and laptop is Win 7 Home Premium 64bit. I connect using a Cradlepoint router with a Verizon MiFi modem. I removed the laptop and desktop from the router and ran anti-virus, malware scans, disk cleaners and registry cleaners, cleared all temp, cookies, history. I connected the MiFi to the desktop and in desperation, I tried a repair program, Reimage, and it not only did not fix the problem, I think it caused other headaches like removing all my updates for Windows since SP2 and the Reimage instructions on their website to undo a repair does not work the way they say. Now I can't do a system restore.

I am at my wits end! I am afraid to try anything on the laptop. I hope someone can help!

When you said you couldn't do a System Restore, what did you mean? I mean, how does it fail? Does it simply not work or do you have no restore points? Do you get any error messages and if so what do they say EXACTLY word-for-word? How did you try to do the Restore? Try booting into Safe Mode and disabling your security software and see if you have any better luck (after first doing the malware scans and repairs suggested above by Richard - again if need be to make certain).

By Reimage, do you mean Reimage - PC Repair Online? How does the undo process differ from what it says IN DETAIL? What does or does not occur? The online site doesn't say much except basically "push the button and follow the prompts" which doesn't help me at all. I tried to chat with them, but they're closed - I assume until the weekday. But from what little I did read, if you tried another Registry Cleaner product AFTER the Reimage, that may have been enough to disable or otherwise prevent the undo process from functioning (but now I'm just guessing - though it did say you could undo as long as you made no "changes" - whatever that actually means).

I hope this helps, and if not your answers will help us find a solution - it's hard to know what might have occurred if you used this and registry cleaners and who knows what else - especially if we can't get System Restore to work (but first we need to know how and why it isn't working which is why I asked the above questions). Be as detailed as you can - I don't care if it a long post (I love long posts).

I'm also concerned that a similar problem occured on another computer with a different OS but connected to the same network at about the same time (though I assume you didn't do all these repair techniques and use these programs on that computer as well so it still shows the original problem with nothing caused by anything done to repair it and that may be valuable). Please do nothing to repair that computer until we can assess what's going on with this one - we don't want to make the situation worse.

I wonder if your whole network somehow was infected or penetrated (somehow TBD) and that caused the initial problem. If the other computer situation isn't complicated by these various repair attempts then we may have better luck finding the root problem with that computer. Repairing the problems caused by the use of these other products on the Vista machine as well is something else (perhaps related but most likely something additional as well).

Thanks and good luck!
