IE8 won’t open links

[FONT=&quot]Lately, IE8 will NOT open links in either a New Tab or New Window.
For instance, this happens when I Google something, then right-click any of the links to open them in a separate tab / window.

A new tab / window will open… but with an error message saying it can’t connect to the link. I have to copy the shortcut and then paste it into the new tab address bar to get the link to open. This doesn’t happen 100% of the time… but often enough to be a major pain in the neck!

This problem is recent (past several weeks?)

The problem is NOT invalid links. In Firefox, using the same Google search, those same links will open in a new tab / window with no difficulty.

It’s not just me: if you Google “IE8 won’t open links”, you’ll see lots of other people have the same complaint.
There are several supposed solutions… but just as many people writing back saying they didn’t work.

What made this problem start up? How can I fix it?

BTW… I’m running Vista 64 Home Premium.

My guess is : your IE8 is NOT your default browser.
Meaning, it does not have all its defaults.
Please check/confirm the scenario ......
Start button > Default Programs > Set Your Defult Programs > left colum, click IE8.
Does it say " This program has all its defaults " ?
If no, click Choose Defaults for this program > put a checkmark on each entry under the list > Save
