IE/ Firefox won't connect

When I try to connect to the internet, both IE and Firefox can't load pages. I'm connected to my network and can ping addresses(like Yahoo). Skype will connect every now and then.Been through all the resets,changed network properties ie: disabled IPv6,enabled it again. Checked and unchecked "acquire IP address automatically".This is my son's laptop and he seems to think it happened after an automatic update,but I'm not sure about that.

when you say you have been through all the resets, what have you actually tried?.

Power cycle on laptop, router,modem. I'm connected but the browsers won't load/connect. Removed Firefox (also default and profile folders)and re-installed from cd. Disabled firewall. Looks like ip is OK and recognized. I can connect to several different networks, both wired and wi-fi. Just get "page cannot be displayed" and "cannot load page" error message.

have you tried a system restore?
click start, then all programs, followed by accessories. then click system tools and open system restore. try restoring to one of the three most recent restore points.

other than that
have you tried a virus scan? (if you have a valid one installed with up to date protection)
