ICS for direct high speed file transfers?

I have a desktop running Vista ultimate32 with 2 Gigabit LAN ports. One is on the PCI bus and I have that one connected to my 4-LAN port wireless router as the router is a T-100 piece of gear, and my high-speed internet connection is nowhere near that speed.

I also have a laptop runnings Vista Ultimate x64 that I normally use wirelessly and have sucsessfully set up a local network on it for sharing files and media via Windows Media Sharing. I want though to be able to connect the laptop directly to the desktops second gigabit port (the PCI-E one) via CAT-5 cable because large files take forever to transfer to the laptop when i connect either via Wireless-g or plug it directly in to the router.

How do I set up the desktop to both share the incoming internet connection and allow me to transfer files directly to the laptop.

I sort of got it working by bridging the two NICs but everytime i connected the laptop via CAT-5 the desktop saw it as part of an 'Unidentified network" and i had to go into network connections and set it from public to private to get things to work.

Both computers are set to workgroup name 'playgroup'.

I figured that this was not really set up as well as it coud be and uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers on all NIC cards and tried starting from scratch, but im still stuck.

I just want to be able to plug the laptop directly into the desktop when i need to move some big stuff arround without having to asign a static address to the laptop because i aslo regularly connect at other locations would rather keep it set to get address automaticly via DNS.

Thank you for any help.

Intresting project. If you have a gigabit switch then I would upgrade to wireless N, gigabit compatible. Yet if two computers are plugged into a gigabit switch transfering files, that's your speed limit.

Well id rather not have to get a Gigabit switch if I dont have to, the only other devices on the wireless-g router suplied by my ISP is a printer and an olde mac G3. Im trying to just be able to directly link the laptop to the desktop, (printer is T-10 and mac is T-100), My internet speed tops out at around 5000 kbps so the only time i really want the Gigabit speed is when I want to transfer a bunch of media files.

Any ideas.

Well you would generally set up an ad hoc connection on pc number 1, then you would take pc number 2 and have one wire to your router and one wire to the other computer. Then you have a internet connection and the other computer shares it and can get the file transfers. Let me know if this is what you want to do.

Well i think i sort of have it working again, I can connect from the laptop to the desktop via wire and see all my shared folders, but am not able to access the internet through the desktop via wire only. I remember that this was so easy with windows-98.
