icon change for programs

Hi

i have a problem with icons. i want change icons but i couldnt do it like Windows Xp-95

how can i change icons for programs. like *.bmp or *.avi 's.

That's a good question...

As far as I can tell, the icons are now tied in with their respective programs. For example, I used to open my QuickTime movies (.mov) with QuickTime, so they had the 'Q' icon. But now I open them with Media Player, so their icon has changed to a Media Player-based icon from somewhere.

Hi Obi_hal, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Unfortunately, Vista does not have a option in it that allows you change the icons for a file extention type like that. The only other way thant the default described by Creepin Jesus above, is to use a 3rd party program instead.

i am sure there is a reson why they change it like this but for me it is a big - for vista.

If I recall correctly, extension icons are in %windir%\Windows\System32\imageres.dll. To modify that you will need a third party application, such as Restorator, Resource Hacker, and googling will yield you more results.
Also, you can use a third party application to handle the task entirely for you, such as Tune Up Utilities, and again googling will present you more options.

Keep in mind, modifying system files (i.e. imageres.dll) can cause serious harm towards computer stability.

One additional word of warning make sure that any third party application is fully vista compatable due to the extra icon sizes with relation to previous os's (256 x 256 px)
