I need serious help.

So a 2 days ago I tried installing a PS2 emulator and it slowed my computer down WAY too much, so I uninstalled it and associated programs for it. Unfortunately the computer was just as slow as it was before I uninstalled, so I preformed a Disc Cleanup and Disc Defrag. The problems started when the computer froze in the middle of Disc Defrag and I had to reboot it. After that it continued to freeze every 5 or so minutes until I did a System Restore to the earliest point (a few hours before I tried installing the emulator) and now it works fine, except one serious problem; it can't identify my wireless network anymore, it simply says "Local Access Only."

I've tried rebooting to computer, rebooting the wireless modem, I reset my firewall to default settings to make sure it didn't somehow get changed and still nothing changed, it still won't identify my wireless network. At first we (myself and my mother because she's the only one who can help atm) thought it might be a problem with the internet as a whole but then why aren't the other laptops and my PS3 effected? So that kinda ruled that out.

All I really know about my equipment is that I'm running on AT&T Uverse Optics, and a Toshiba with Vista Home 34bit. I don't have an ethernet cable, nor access to one or the money to buy one. Come this time next week my brother will be coming home and be taking his laptop thus I will lose my only internet access. I desperately need help with this matter.

May I ask how to do that? I'm rather new to computers.

Further details include my laptop make and model, the wireless nework card model, my antivirus and the fact that even uninstalling the driver didn't work.

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite L355-S7905
Wireless card: Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter
Anti-Virus: avast! Free Antivirus

Seriously, it's been about a month and I can't seem to find any help anywhere on this problem. I did aquire an ethernet cable but I couldn't connect to the internet by plugging it straight into a modem either. Please, any help would be very much appreciated.
