Hi annie2009,

I'm a little confused here as this is a "cable converter" as shown in the link below? If so, there are no drivers. Cables don't need them, nor does a cable converter. Am I missing something? - rs232 cable converter - Google Product Search

Perhaps you mean the item being connected to the cable? If so, what would that be?

Yeah, there are drivers for these devices, but you need to know which device you've got. Currently, I have a Belkin and a Xircom, and the latter does what I need it to do:

Xircom Xircom 1 port USB to Serial Converter Driver Summary

If you look at your device itself, it'll almost certainly have a brand and model number written on it. Although these things are getting old, you might still be able to find a driver that provides adequate function.

Perhaps someone can make things a little clearer??? What item are we talking about???

It's this sort of thing, just as an example:

Xircom Entrega USB to Serial Adapter SOLD OUT

Of course, the OP may have something different.

Those things require drivers? I notice there's a reference to insert floppy disks.

Also, her nomenclature is a little confusing as she stated "usb to rs232 cable converter" , not a "USB to Serial Adapter", thus my "no driver" response. ;)

Yeah, a driver is required because the USB device is instantiating a classic PC serial port (Rs232) as far as the OS is concerned. It's not just a matter of splicing the wires into a different connector. USB and Rs232 are not interoperable on that level.

I agree though - a bit more info from the OP would go a long way.

Edit: these are mostly used on laptops nowadays - machines which need a serial port for whatever reason but don't have one built-in. To operate ancient GPSs, barcode readers, diagnostic equipment...
