I have nothing to hide but...

If it's all the same I don't like being spied on. I've heard that Vista calls home to MS often. Is this true? If so can I turn it off with no ill-effects?

Thanks...

Spied upon? No. Online validation of your product key is more like it. If you turn it off this won't happen and you'll be forced to validate your install over and over.

You can setup your firewall to tell you everytime the computer wants to make an "outgoing" call. I have microsoft network monitor which is free. Every now and again I run this in the background while I work, it logs all of the information that is sent and received from your computer in a way you will be able to understand. It also logs all of the IP addresses associated. It even tells me what information is sent to my router from the local computer. If you are worried I would download this. I will not say it is because of lack of validation because I do not know you and vista has had bad press. If vista is phoning home like Itunes used to do then there are serious issues because of the Data Protection Act.
