I have installed 8GB of Ram and My system is only reading 4782mb

I'm running Art Applications and I recently installed 8gb of ram where as I previously had 4gb. After installing there was no difference in vista x64. When I open my task manager It reads:

Physical Memory (MB)
Total 7933
Cached 4782
Free 10

How do I infor the system that there is an additional 4gb installed?

Thanks

It is indeed showing all 8 gigs of memory. What you are looking at is what is used, and what is free. Something like that anyways. So 8 gigs of ram is 8000 megs right? so the 7933 is about right for it to be reading.

Don't worry, your fine.

Thanks, However I'm running photoshop and flash at once and photoshop has run out of RAM which is preventing me from saving, I shut down flash and it still prevents me from saving. This is a photoshop problem so I'm not worried about that I'm worried about it using all 8GB. The Task manager says it's only using 3.46GB and it never goes past that. How come it isn't using the memory?

The program is using the memory. When it's open, it's using parts of the memory and when you're doing activities, it's also using memory. Do you have other programs running in the background beside those two?

No Actually I'm actually only using Photoshop at this point. It reads that I'm using 37.43% of the ram, 2.98GB total. It still says there is only 39mb of ram free? These are the same numbers it used before I installed the ram. There is no speed difference with the applications either. Isn't there a way to manually adjust the memory usage with virtual memory?

it is most likely a combination of vista and a crappy motherboard. For ex, I have 4 GB but vista only sees 3. If I try to remap in BIOS for 4 I get a black screen because Vista has a bug.

You've got to remember that 32-Bit applications, by their very nature, are limited to a 4GB address space, and by OS design, are limited to only a maximum of 2GB. The applications you're running are 32-bit, and this is likely why this is happening, even though you are running a x64 OS.

Adding more RAM doesn't mean your applications will have more ram available. In most cases, it simply means that you can run more applications at once while minimizing the use of the pagefile.

I don't use photoshop myself, so this is a shot in the dark.

Is it a coincidence that photoshop thinks the Ram is maxed out at 3.46gb - when this is pretty much the max that would be available on a 32bit system ?

I believe there are other photo apps. CS4 , I think that can use more.

Thanks thats probably the reason. However I am using 3D Studio Max 2008 64-bit and it only uses the minimum as well. I will consult with the autodesk forum for this answer i appreciate the help.

Thanks

SIW2 is right. 32-bit applications are still "stuck on stupid" and limited to 4gb (in most cases).
