I feel useless

I know that this will sound silly to most but I am also sure that some may feel the same, I have already said this to a couple of members in PM's but I wanted to talk about it here as I can't really stop feeling useless.

As much as I feel so at home here, I also feel so damn useless, and keep putting so much pressure onto myself to try to help others, yet my knowledge of most things here is so poor that I feel I am a total waste of space :o this is a feeling that I cannot do anything about, but to make everyone understand I would have to go into my life story and I am not about to do that ("thank god" I hear you cry!! lol ) and you'd be right.

But in all seriousness, I wish I could be of more help, and get paranoid into thinking that I am being watched to see how much of a help I am or am not being, this I know is not true......I hope :o lol

Please forgive the silly post, but does anyone else feel like this? my guess would be no, as most threads that I have read would indicate that you all know your stuff, I know it is a matter of learning and remembering, but that does not come natural to me, most advice and help that I have received goes in one ear and out of the other, practically nothing sticks, my mind goes blank when reading tutorials and I can't deal with it.

Maybe others are like this too, but maybe not so extreme as in they can eventually get stuff into their heads, I just can't for the most part, and feel I am giving the community here nothing of any value :( I really apologise for this :o

Please don't get the Violins out lol its not meant to come across like that, but me and wording things also is not great.

In short I hope you don't get penalized for not helping anyone, believe me I would if I could, but I get down easy.......and apologise to anyone that I may have advised and it has not been at all helpful. :o

Please don't have a go at me for this post, I just wanted to say in a nutshell that I feel bad for not being able to help anyone

All I find I keep doing is asking things myself instead of helping others

By all means you are not silly.

I feel the same way as you do, everyone seems to have much more knowledge than I do.

I hardly ever post a question, for fear I'll be laughed at.
So mostly I read the posts and learn that way.

Well I am glad I am not alone, thats one blessing, although I don't mean that in an offensive way :)

I also nearly always get nervous of reading replies, I've been like this on every forum I have ever been on, and its awful, then again I have to cater for two of me, so its even harder lol :(

But all the techy things are just way over my head, and although I feel so much sympathy for those that are having major problems, I wish I could stand over their PC with a magic wand and wave it across and all is sorted, and in an ideal world that would be terrific, a squad called "PC Magic Squad" no call out charge, and a completely free service. :D yeah I wish lol

But thank you for the nice comments, not what I was expecting

Hi J+H, you are way funny.

Don't feel bad about it, every one feel like useless sometime. I like to point out that lots of people here are engineers whether computer is their profession or not. Some people learn from their hands on experience in learning and building computer from scrap and keeping it healthy. If you hang around computer forums long enough, one day you would be knowledgeable and confident enough to build your own computer then thing you read and listened will stay for good.

Whether it is good help or bad help are all helps. Help is all we do and all we need. Nice to see you around. Cheers!

no matter how small your contribution it all adds up at the end of the day and without your/our small amounts of input vista forums wouldn't be as popular and useful as it is today

I am a newbie to computer repairs and just finished up my A+ Certification. With that being said I too feel left out of the loop to. There are always two ways to look at the situation. One, look at like you do and feel useless or look at like I do a free learning center. A center with an abundant of knowledge for every one to share in. I've learned same amount of tips and tricks here if not more than I actually did getting my A+ Certification. Though with the knowledge of what I have obtained from the A+, I now have a better understanding of what the other tech savvy and certified professionals are talking about in this forum. I just jump right in and start asking questions and answer what I can and when I can...fun to learn from others.

Hi JH,

yeah there's no need to feel bad about it. A lot of people have different strengths in different areas and there's no shame in asking questions about something you don't know. I've never met a person that was born knowing 'everything' ;)

I like to pass on what I've learnt from others and from personal experience. Sometimes I feel like a noob asking some questions that I've had zero experience with, but there's always a first time :)

So learn what you can and pass on what you can, but don't beat yourself up if you don't feel your if your not helping. No ones judging you mate :)

Hi J-H....

were all noobs here in one way or another, every member on this forum knows something another member does not, that's how the wealth of knowledge is formed

i have made many cock ups .....& given info thats turned out to be wrong :o but it happens...

i assure you the last thing we want is ppl to feel pressured to post, or feel like they're being watched, i spent months reading before i posted & even then i just dipped in slowly

the one thing i can safely say about this forum is, there are no wanna be tech head e-peen polishers, the members here are VERY helpful & don't care if you personally don't know that much about PC's, they will help out all the same ;)

so just relax & pretty soon you will be like our ambassador = Ted!!! (bare foot kid), just watch how he works the forum.:eek:

Hi JH,

As everyone else has said, Do not feel you have nothing to offer. We all started out not knowing anything. We all learn at different rates. Just offer what you can when you can and keep reading and learning. That's what most of us are doing. I still remember getting my first computer. Man was I lost, dazed and confused, but I stuck with it & now I'm fairly comfortable with them. It comes with time. I try also to keep in mind that we learn the most from our mistakes and not so much when things go well.

I hardly ever post a question, for fear I'll be laughed at.
So mostly I read the posts and learn that way.

The only stupid question is the unasked question.

Gary

Yep. The beauty of this site is that it's a gateway site between the inexperienced / moderate and experienced. You don't have have to worry about about being flamed or receive patronising and condescending comments from the so called 'l33t' nobs found on other tech forums. (usually some kid who's still fascinated by his new pubic hair whos only way to feel 'superior' is by belittling others :p)

It also helps that most here are pretty friendly bunch :)

This is the best thread i've read tonight...not one person is good at everything here...we learned as we go with people we spoke with, or watched as they did their thing.
Would you believe i did not know a thing about computers till late 1990's didn't really take an interest until I had an unfortunate turn of events in Sept .2005.
Well, I had so much time recovering that i was literally living in a computer world.
Read everything on mobos, cpu's, fans and the like.
Never went to school to advance myself in a computer course, but had a great desire to learn, and understanding why things happen as they do.
Built my first custom PC last year, when I hit that power button, felt like i won the lottery.
Hope my story gives you an uplift that it takes time and patience my friend.
Keep your head up bro!:D

I was considering replying to each person individually, but that would take me all day, no offence lol so I'll answer them all together instead :)

First off thank you to all that have made me feel better about things, alot of my trouble is that I pile the pressure onto myself and always want to be seen and not forgotten, sound selfish? probably, but its not intentional.

My first PC was an AMD K2 I think it was called and it was a blasted curse, what could go wrong went wrong from the day it was delivered by the fellow that built it, that said he knows his stuff and was not to blame, infact there was another customer who had the exact same PC with the exact same problems, ie rebooting constantly for no reason, games stuttering even games like chess for godness sake lol

Alot more went on besides and in the end after having my PC in for about the 20th time in a month he said he'd had enough of it and agreed to build me and the other chap a Pentium, and I never looked back, not intending to start a debate on Intel vs AMD, seen far too many of these threads on the Net and in the end they got quite nasty, so no way do I want to be the firestarter of that debate lol :o

I did once buy a new HD and it was a 160 gig and the chap said to me "Do you want to install it?", "I'll write down what you need to do and just follow the diagrams and whats written and you'll be fine", he said "Ok I said, why not, I want to learn" that was my big mistake, why I hear you cry!! well as I got home I wipped the side off the case, and slotted in the new HD, following the instructions, but I missed something and almost wiped 40 gig off of it!!! he had it back in and put things right, but I felt a total jerk, nothing new there then :p

Trouble for me reading is (and this is why I cannot read books) don't misunderstand me here, I can read lol but alot of the time it can take me half an hour to get through 1 page in a book due to getting stuck on one line and re-reading it fifty times or more before I can move on, pathetic isn't it, "yes it is Jekyll", "shut up Hyde" sorry about that, he can never keep his mouth shut.

Well I'm going to have to learn pretty quick as soon the chappy that built my PC is retiring and moving to Italy and so then I am buggered, I only have the one PC and so when things go belly-up and I cannot get to the Internet I am stuffed like a Turkey lol no means by which to get help, its not simple for me to get new hardware, small town that has like what I call "Mobile Alley" 4 yes count em 4 mobile shops and about 6 charity shops, and then the odd food store, so where to get parts? no idea, I have to resign myself to the fact that once I get a final upgrade done before this chap leaves and it then packs up, that that will be "Goodnight Vienna" and I will be so so sad, but as the saying goes "All good things must come to an end" unless you are a millionaire, how lovely, but it aint gonna happen :(

I've just seen this thread, I know I'm late in here today and will be gone in a minute to sort out the evening meal, but I wanted to say I can't really add anything to what has already been said.

Just take your time and try to learn as much as you can, if you have OneNote and you find a useful answer, or anything else for that matter, put a copy in OneNote you can then go back and read whenever you have time and if you come across someone with a problem that it will help copy/paste it into a reply to the post.

As someone said no one knows everything we are all learning and will carry on learning as long as we use computers, I lurk a lot in the newsgroups and have done since first getting a computer in 1998 I also belong to a few forums, from each I learn something new everyday and there are days when I'm able to help someone with a problem then again there can be days or weeks when I never post a thing just lurk and see whats happening ;)

Just keep visiting and watching things, even if you don't say anything, you'll know that there will always be someone friendly around to say hello :D

I'm sure a lot of people feel like this sometimes. I do. I'm just trying to help in the ways that I can, albeit maybe some are simple answers. You have seemed to be doing well in helping. Don't let Mr.Hyde get in the way too much.:D

Hello Airbot,

Nice to meet you :D and thank you for the compliment, I've had more encouragement here than I ever got from the jokers........er teachers I had at school, all they did at every parents meeting evenings was tell my parents I was a no hoper, thats partly true for people that know me extremely well, and they were the odd two friends I had in London, but Hyde got in the way and destroyed everything, so now the only people I know are you guys and gals here, and I am very happy to know you all :D

That is not even scratching the surface of things, but I do try to keep Hyde away believe me, its a daily struggle, but eventually I loose out, and the inevitable happens

But I tend as a gamer when I can, to look for posts about problems with games, even then I don't always know but I do always look there and if I can even offer a suggestion I will, but then the nerves kick in and I think to myself.......what a wonderful world........eh......thats a song, sorry, getting carried away again!! I think to myself that that person may tell me what I have told him/her is a load of old cobblers and I then fret about it, silly I know but at least now I know I am not alone, at least in some respects :)

Jekyll and Hyde ;)
