Hi

This cheeky monkey has power, and all the blue lights illuminate, but the screen is blank. I have plugged it up to a working monitor and manage to see the initial part of the boot up in a good pic, but then it goes bezerk and there are many lines of white characters on a black background going up and down...?!?!? What the hell?!?! Any ideas peeps?!?!

Have you tried to update the bios lately? Can you access the hard drive from another computer and do a virus scan?

The hard drive is brand new and raw. So how would I update in this instance?

It seems as if that is a graphics card problem. I would not trust a BIOS update if you cannot see the screen.

I suggest you return the computer, as the video card should be covered under the warranty no problem.

I think you need more than 1gig of RAM

Maybe not,but if you want to run Vista well you need 2Gig.
If they decide to have the shop replace it they should also ask for a RAM upgrade for their inconvenience,cost nothing to try.

I have loads of RAM chips so that isn't an issue. The laptop is no longer under warranty. Could I possibly reflow the chip? I have seen the videos on how to do it on YouTube?

That would be an advanced procedure, and one I am not familiar with. It seems your graphics chip is soldered onto the motherboard, and you can imagine the problems that will cause. Honestly, probably the easiest thing to do would be to replace the motherboard.
