I'm probably posting this in the wrong spot. I have a Hp computer I was going to install Vista on it but the computer has black out, is there a way to fix it. The Cd/DVD drive dose not work anymore.

Hello Raven, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Could you give more details by what you mean that it has "blacked out"? What exactly has blacked out, stopped working, error messages, etc......?

For the CD/DVD drive, you can check the cables to make sure that they are connected firmly and properly. If all else fails, you can luckily get a new one pretty cheap these days.

Please post back with more details.

Double check the monitor cable connections to make sure that they are firmly and properly connected.

Do you see any of the boot up screens?

Does the computer sound or look like it is running otherwise?

Is the computer making any beeps during boot?

Might check to see if you have a dead drive or monitor by testing with another one.

It sounds like the batter is dead, and that could be because the power supply is not charging the battery....

Hi raven1920,

Let me get this straight. You state that the lights come on when the laptop is powered only by the battery on it own, and that if you try to power it up with the adapter attached you get nothing? If that is the case, it sounds like your adapter is the cause of the problem - it is not charging the battery and the battery has insufficient charge in it to do anything else other than power those lights. If you're lucky, the only faulty part will be your adapter - luckily, these are relatively easy to get hold of (many will actually work with different laptops). However, it is possible that you may need to replace the battery if it no longer holds charge. In fact, I would replace both battery and adapter - for details of the model numbers for your battery and adapter, see the battery and adapter themselves.

Could I do it myself or is it better for a repairman to do it?

It might be worth the service charge to just find out exactly what is wrong with the laptop before spending money on parts that may or may not be all of the problem.

I hope it turns out to not be to much wrong with it.

Remove the battery. If the laptop continues to do the same thing it could be the power adapter.

But my money is on the motherboard...sorry.
