HP CM1015 Vista 64 and kitten

So it's Christmas, The kids are busy unwrapping their presents, The cats are making Nests in the piles of discarded wrapping paper, I'm deducting the kitten from halfway up the tree when the wife starts unwrapping her new HP CM1015

A bit later sees me thinking of hiring a small crane as I lug it upstairs.

10 minutes of pulling various bits of tape off and its plugged in ready to go. Do a test print from the printer, lovely, do a test scan, wonderful. Fire up her XP machine, install the software and do a few test prints. Still good. Set the printer to be shared.

Back down the stairs, deduct kitten from tree, give kids bin bag for paper, fire up my vista machine.

Install software. Erm, no. Says I'm not an administrator. Erm, i think you'll find I'm am ! Try all the usual tricks. Still refuses. Do a search on the net, fruitless. Scratch head deduct kitten from almost at the top of tree, insert kitten in tall cardboard box ( lid open )

Make coffee, Yell at kids to turn the TV down, go to hp drivers section and try to decipher which one they want me to use. say nuts to it and try the all one by one.

The most likely is universal print driver so install it in dynamic mode. when installed search for the printer with the shared printers option !! find the printer and.............it says its not supported, erm, pardon me, your own blurb says it is.

Deduct kitten from middle of tree, back in the box, close lid, laugh evilly !

Try the other two options in the driver, one says it cant find the printer I've just pointed it at and the other says it cant communicate with it.

scratch head again, stare at houdini kitten at the top of tree and remark to the wife how we dont need an angel next year.

HELP !!!!

Let's see what we can get going here. Which OS are you using? Which of the drivers did you pick? From what I'm seeing here, we should be using the PCL6 from this page: HP Color LaserJet CM1015/CM1017 MFP series -  Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center (I am guessing you're using a 64-bit Vista).

Yes, vista 64 bit and yes those drivers are the ones that are giving all the trouble.

Sorry forgot to mention, I have installed it on the daughters XP machine ( Via sharing ) and thats fine si I know its not the wifes computer causing the problem

I don't know how hard this would be, but would it be possible to try taking the printer and wire it directly to the Vista machine to see if we're having a networking issue or a printer issue?

Not a chance ! I'm not lugging that thing miles ! I have proves the networking by the fact it works on my daughters machine.

Have you set the printer with a static IP?

Try some variation on the following method

Download the universal driver, then extract the files to a convenient location.

Go to Add Printer and select "Add local Printer"--> Create New Port (Standard TCP/IP) --> enter IP address (untick query printer maybe?) then if it prompts for the drivers point to to the folder you have extracted them into.

Which driver does what? That'll make it easier for people to refer to each individually. The one that can't communicate with the printer (even though it sees it) seems to give us the most options, but may not be the most functional.

Also, have you tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it?

Ok cracked it !

I think the problem exists because the printer can have an addon network port. the software presumes it will be attached directly to the network, not through another computer. so when it sees the dns name its only the first eight characters, it looks it up in its list and just gives up.

So, I figured ( with your help people ) that if i could get the drivers on i could change it manually I downloaded the 451MB (Yikes) software package and installed the driver up to the point where it tries to detect the printer. installed the printer via the find new printer / network / wifes machine etc. Vista then installed the driver quite happily. I then canceled the HP software installation and Voila !

So, thanks for your help people.

Now, wheres that flaming kitten !

Good solution. Could be useful for other people who are trying to trick their computers into behaving.

I have Vista Ultimate 64 and got my cm1015 to work by using the XP 64 driver. I downloaded it Here. There are other XP 64 driver packages but this is the one that worked for me.
