I have alot of DVDs that I want to save to my computer. First, because it sounds and looks much better from the HDD, and second because the DVD will virtually never skip and you will not have buy a completely new DVD. If there is any way I can save it to my comp by using Media Center or with a free program please tell me.

There are free decrypter programs that enable you to rip dvd's to your hard drive, BUT... They are not legal. DVD's are usually copy protected, and this requires stripping the copy protection away so that it can be copied to hdd. The only way to save a "legal" copy of a dvd to your hard drive is to save the "digital copy" of it that is included with the dvd. If no digital copy is included, then you can download one from sites such as CinemaNow and blockbuster, but this entails re-purchasing the download copy.

Thanks alot. I have tried many free programs that "claim" they can strip the css from the dvd and save it to your computer but it saves the file as a folder and you are not able to view it as one video. Ill just wait to try the RealDVD from Real Player.

It is legal to make a backup copy for your own personal use whether that is digital or analogue is up to you. If they didn't want you to copy it they wouldn't use these lame arse copy protection programs that can be circumvented by children. I personally own several thousand DVD's, but I never playthe orginals. I often download one that is in my collection, as it is easier/quickert than finding my own copy.

The ability to create copies of the media you've purchased for personal use is a long-accepted facet of the fair-use doctrine in U.S. copyright law (at least, it used to be). However, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) states that it's illegal to break the CSS copy-protection mechanism employed by most commercial DVD movies. This has been upheld by the Federal Courts.
