Internet Explorer 7 and FireFox are not working. COD4 has lost the internet connection. AIM still works as well as the other ie browser. I have Vista x64 Ultimate, I made recovery cds on my friend's HP computer whom own's Home Premium. Is it ok to use this if so I will. But if there is anyone who knows how to fix it, please help.

Hi mate, first of all calm down.
Fill out your system specs so we know what we are dealing with.
What other IE browser are you using? Have you updated?
It is possible the update could have caused the problem, try to restore before this problem started to happen.

Ok so first of all I was lazy thinking that I didn't need to create a restore point yet. Now I have to pay for that because gateway never gave me a vista disc. I have a gateway P-173 FX, a 2.20 ghz duo core processor 4 gigs of ram 8800m gts graphics and a 64 bit operating system. Yes during the time I have used it there has been a few updates. I was home for vacation and it worked fine until I accidentally shut it down wrong and since then it hasn't worked. The other ie browers I am using is the one in my task bar. There are 2 of them, one says internet explorer(64-bit) and the other is just internet explorer. The non 64 bit one is the one that works, it has full access to everything but my college email, but I can access my hotmail email. Like I said I have my 3 disk made here to restore to home premium but its a last resort, everything is failing and I have college work to due >< plz help :D.

Hi bmart727,
There may still be restore point available yet you have not created them yourself. They may have been made automatically when installing updates, unless the function is disabled. Have you checked? You can refer to this tutorial: How to Do a System Restore in Vista

Yah, I already tried to system restore twice to the earliest date that it could possibly restore to, It was november 27th, so I tried to restore and it still doesn't work. I think it is something wrong with my registry or maybe some sort of virus. I think maybe I should just reformat.

If the restore point is older than the problem, you may want to revert back. Doing a virus scan will not hurt, if you have no AV program installed, there are free scanners on the internet, eg on Kaspersky's homepage. You can also look for errors in the Event log (start - search for event viewer) and the Reliability Monitor (search for reliability and performance monitor). Post back. Someone here may have a solution if provided some more clues. You could always test to run IE without add-ons (Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools) to see if this works, though perhaps against the odds. Good luck!

Ok so I checked both the event viewer and the reliability and performance monitor. The computer seems to be running fine. However in the event viewer there are many errors, this could be the main source of my problems.

Hi bmart727, are the restorations you tried twice complete successfully and then the problem persists or it did complete the system restore? Have you try to system restore it to original factory condition? What do you mean by "accidentally shut it down wrong"? If it didn't work, has the laptop been dropped that may causing internal damage?

I want to restore it to the original factory condition, but i dont know how. And by shut it down wrong, I mean I hit the power button, and then it was like windows has been shutdown in a improper way or something like that. No I have never dropped it, its my baby I payed 1600 or so for it, I treat it very well. Also the restores that I tried, were on the date of november 27th and they completed successfully and the problem still persist, The problem had occured before that date anyway.

Hello bmart727.

You should be able to find the info to restore to factory either in the manual or at the manufacturers web site. As for IE you might try a reset. Info here if needed. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/114310-internet-explorer-reset.html

Not sure that will work since FF is also having a problem, but maybe worth a try.

Please keep us posted.

Also when I try to start programs like microsoft word I get these errors. C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.exe
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

Yo thanks for taking time to look at my post, Eventually I found a gateway recovery tool that would allow me to reset everything back to factory settings. So I backed up all my info on a external. Good news after the reset everything works fine again and I have a brand new pc.

Hi, bmart727,

Now you are back working ...

as you have Ultimate and if you have sufficient space on your external drive, you may want to think about making an Image backup of the working system, I would suggest that if you install your main applications and then make the backup it may make things easier if something similar happens again Hopefully nothing will happen in the future but I find the fact of having the backup gives a bit of reassurance :geek::D
