ok so i just installed a new motherboard into my computer, and for a while it was working fine and dandy but then suddenly it would not turn back on after i turned it off to check something. what was happening was it would give a short burst of life and then immediately shut off. i thought it wasnt getting enough power so i set my power supply dial to 'hi' rather than 'auto'. big mistake. now whenever it tries to power on it sort of revs up and lights up then it goes off and on until i finally flip the power switch to off. i dont get anything on the screen so i dont know what the problem is.

Hello,

Did you ever confirm that the PSU is good?

Are you sure all the connections are good on everything?
Maybe remove and re-seat the RAM.

well the reason i didnt include details is because i dont really remember why i turned it off but i knew it was for something. anyway, i took the entire computer apart and put it back together again twice and i cleaned the thermal paste from the CPU and replaced it with new stuff. i also put washers in between the mobo and the screws but it still isnt working. i thought it might be something to do with the motherboard shorting out but im not sure.

well it could be a short.. maybe the PSU used to work.. but now it's shorted out or dying. if the Computer is actually turning on, that makes me think the Mobo might be ok, and not shorted. and that it's turning on, then failing sounds like a PSU.. maybe it's on it's last straw. can you afford to try another one... or I have a 300watt PSU if you want it.. lol

Did you check that all the screw peg things were all in the correct place before mounting the mobo in the case?

Try and think about it. While you're thinking about it, remove the washers; they're not necessary. Adding pieces of metal to a circuit board when not asked for and when not called for isn't a very good idea. You're using all the stand-offs, right? Btw, what model board did you get and where did you get it? Your sig still shows your old board.

I would triple check all my connections. Make sure you're not missing anything that should supply power to the board... like an extra 4 pin molex or floppy connection some boards require.

well the washers are plastic. anywhom, i put in the old mobo and it works fine with this PSU so that tells me the new mobo is fried or something, so i have to return it. the one i got was the one u recommended: ASUS A8S-X SE Socket 939 Mainboard w/ DDR1, PCI Express x16, LAN - OEM w/ Backplate Included at 3B Tech - Buy computer parts, notebooks, desktops, & home electronics and it did work fine for a while. also the new board didnt have onboard networking so i couldnt get on the internet =\.
