Hi guys! nice forum!

I got a new computer with ultimate 64x on and plugging in my external hardrive, a HP HD3000 via usb and vista first said "want to download drivers?" I did that, but got the message "the best driver is allready installed". Ok, well onward.. but no, it dosent even come up in systemlist.. Started adminpage with the dischandling in it (dont really know the name for it since I use swedish Vista). there I can see the harddrive but it´s not given a driveletter, I can check its properties and atempt to update driver but nothing works. Cant even format.

It works fine on my old xp machine and I have some mp3 on it. I formated it earlier with ntsf.

Checked Hp.com for help but no drivers there to be found. Tried contacting the hp suppport but i wouldnt accept the serialnumber of my drive saying it was wrong.. uh.

Other usb devices work just fine, mouse and keyboard.

So any ideas? been googling around and havent found a solution.

Thanks In advance

Regards
Dave

Hi Dave

Vista should have the natve drivers this external drive needs to be recognized, so it shouldn't need an updated driver.
It seems that for some reason, Vista just "burped" when trying to initialize this external drive and it's not fully operable. Have you tried unhooking the drive, then reboot without it, then shut down, hook up the drive and reboot again?
Or try hot-plugging (unplug & plug in while booted) it and see if Vista can recognize and install it properly again?

There is also an option in the Disk Mgmt applet to "Rescan Disks", open Computer Mgmt - Disk Mgmt, click Action - Rescan Disks, you can try that too.

I had an internal drive that was doing just about the same thing you're experiencing and it worked itself out after I played around with unhooking it, rebooting, powering off and hooking it up again, then rebooting. That usually fixes any problems when the system has trouble with recognizing and installing hardware properly, as long as it's not a case of failing hardware.
