Help with Freezing on desktop loading

Okay so I’m stuck Vista freezes and locks my entire system within minutes of loading the desktop.

I’ve removed all my external hardware, usb devices, printers etc… Expect the monitor, mouse and monitor.

I’m at a loss this problem started small freezing every once and while(I leave my computer on all the time) now I can’t get more then a minute or 2 into the desktop.

Any suggestion would be great, I’ve tried a lot of stuff and am hoping for further insight.

Vista Home Premium 32bit
HP Pavilion a1357c
AMD64 x 2 4200 2.2ghz
3 g ram
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT 512

Welcome to the forums.

You said "Vista Home Premium 32bit" do you have Service Pack 1 installed?

Try booting in safe mode and run a scan for viruses?
1. Also Try booting into Safe Mode and see if you can get to the Windows Logs and see if there is something there that might tell you wants going on.

4. Also might want to check and see what is in the RUN keys in the registry. Easy way to see what's in the Startup (run keys) is click on Start > Run and type MSCONFIG and click OK.

Tried those the windows log just says "at xx:xx time the system shut down was unexpected code 6008

Not sure abut service pack 1 I tried rolling back to a earlier restore point about 2 weeks ago. How can I check to see if I have service pack 1?

Luckily I can use safe mode but thats it, I am on my laptop now which is a savior for my down desktop.

I'm runing chkdsk one more time to make sure there isn' anything there.

Hi wxbrad

Click on My Computer and then click on Help at the top then click on About. If you do to see anything that says Service Pack 1 then you do not have it installed.

I was able to use the sysinfo tool to grab my specs right before it froze again.

Xcellent. Looks like SP1 is not installed from what you posted. Here is the download link for SP1.

Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)

But I would think to get your PC running properly before the SP1 install. Ya know?

Thanks tryin a few more things, but I'm worried it is either bad memory or a bad mother board those are the 2 hardware pieces I haven't isolated yet.

scannow and chkdsk ran fine and cleaned up a few things but still freezing. My next option is to back up verything to my secondary drive and reinstall.

My video card is new but I took it out and went with the on-board video adapter and she still froze, do you think installing service pack 1 in safe mode would help?

any thoughts??

I think your on the right track as far as a hardware issue. Can you try 1 stick of memory at a time? Also unplug all non necessity devices and use the bare minimum and see how it goes. Once you get the freezing to stop then I recommend SP1 install.

Yeah was thinking of doing just that also thinking maybe the power supply in going bad or not big enough for the new PCI-card. I only got 350watts, so curious if it's a power supply issue.

You left out, "or a bad HP".

I didn't see an answer to ragin's question about what's loaded at startup?

Easy way to see what's in the Startup (run keys) is click on Start > Run and type MSCONFIG and click OK.

Click the startup tab up top, then list all the items you see with checks in them.
