Help With Access Denied Poblem

I have a Laptop and PC both running Vista Ultimate on a home wireless network. I have enabled Bitlocker Drive Encryption on the laptop as this contains my sensitive info. The other PC was installed without. Neither computers are password protected and both have full administation rights.

My problem is this: I can access the Public Folder on the PC from the laptop but not the other way round. All access is denied to the laptop from the PC . Both computers have public/sharing switched on and AUC is off. From Internet Explorer, if I can click on network on either machine I can see the whole network, but if I double click laptop from the e-machine I get the error message. Clicking diagnose the problem results in: Nothing wrong with the network.

All settings on each computer look identical yet I cannot resolve this access problem. I have searched high and low for a solution without success and then I thought the Bitlocker Drive encryption on the laptop might prevent access from another computer.

Without actually turning off Bitlocker, can any of you gurus out there shed any light on the matter?

I don't know whether this is the problem because I can remotly connect to the laptop via PC Anywhere from the internet.

I'm now at my wits end and pleading for help!!!

Thanx in anticipation.

hello Dobbies and welcome to Vista Forums.

At first, you should check a few things.

1. By any case, do the computers have the same computer name? The computer names must be identical.
2. Try creating a new share, e.g. share the "documents" folder, and see if you can access the documents folder in your laptop from the other pc.
3. Try connecting to the PC using it's IP address. You can find what IP address you laptop has by running CMD, and typing IPCONFIG . Then , go to your PC and connect to your laptop like this: Open Start and at the search bar type \\192.168.1.2\users (change 192.168.1.2 with your laptop's ip address). if this works, let us know.

Hi Limneos

Well, I've spent many many hours trying to connect to the laptop without success but the IP adrress/users you suggested has worked and is now connected.
Why won't it connect via the icon in IE and network and where do I go from here?

Well, if the workgroup is the same on both computers, it probably has to do with your router providing DNS and DHCP to your computers...try changing to static ip addresses, if you know what it is.

A fast solution is this:
on your PC, not your laptop, edit this file : C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
and at the bottom of the file add the line:

your_laptops_computer_name your_laptops_ip_address

e.g.

dobbiesnotebook 192.168.1.2

save the hosts file and you will be able to connect to your laptop using it's name, not ip address. That's for now.

Regards

Limneos,
Thank you very much for your welcome to the site and help on this matter.

From what you suggested, that the problem might point to the router providing incorrect DNS and DHCP to my computers, I switched off the wireless network completely and connected the two computers together via a LAN cable. I then configured the adapters with static IP addresses as follows:

Laptop
IP 192.168.1.20
SubNet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.20

PC
IP 192.168.1.22
SubNet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.20

With these settings I get the same result, Laptop can access PC but not vice-versa unless I use the command you suggested: \\192.168.1.20\users and even then the connection is slow as though it's struggling. The laptop can access the PC just by the command \\192.168.1.22.

I think overall that the problem lies within the laptop settings but where remains a mystery to me. I hope the forum can help.

Regards
