my laptop has been having some problems running, so i was in the process of repairing my compter when i ran into a problem...

my laptop was set to hibernate (which i find out now is a stupid idea due to the problems) but anyways, now when i try to start it up my bios screen isnt the same (where i can select it to boot from a cd/dvd) those options arent there, and ive tried hitting the keys but nothing happens... and when it gets past the opening screen, it stays stuck on a black screen with a small cursor int he top left corner... and i have no idea how to get out of this or anything... it will stay on this screen untill i try and restart my comp by hitting the power button... and when i hit the power button it turns off right away, when my computer is on i have to hold it in...

so is there anyway to hard start bios? or vista?

or am i going to have to connect the hard drive to a diff computer and try and fix it that way?

Hello lumsden,

Welcome to the forum.

If you are using a Vista install DVD try pressing F8 during the bootup screen. This should give you an option to choose the boot device

I hope this helps

Try to remove battery after shutdown and reinstall battery. Then start the computer and try a few more function keys beside F8 which I think goes into boot menu. Try F2, F10, F12 or so on. Some time when you boot with OS CD in the optical drive, it will ask you to press any key to boot from CD. Well do that.

Hope this helps and report back.

As Bruce suggests Remove the battery and then press and hold the start button for 10 seconds before replacing the battery and trying again

no i have tried that... no key works at all when it starts up

When you try this you often have to keep pressing the key the whole time that the start screen is showing

If you do not know which key you need it can take a lot of tries to find it. (not just press a key.. Nope that doesnt work!!).

thx for the replies.. however none of those solutions worked... i have tried every single F key, (i have the bios options of F2 and F12, neither show up as options nor do they work).... and when i tried to just turn it on when the 'toshiba recovery disc' (its the only OS disc i have) it doenst even start up anymore, it will turn on for about 5 seconds, the power light will flash from blue (normal on color)) to orange and back then turn off... im pretty stuck... i guess ihave to take it in now to some place that can power my hard drive with anoter comp and try it from there..

May be there is really nothing else you can do. Over heat is a known problem for a Toshiba laptop. May be you can take it apart to have a clean up to see if it will stay on.
How long you have it? The air intake on the bottom takes in lot off dust; may be it is time. Let us know how things go.
