HELP! System Recovery is freezing up.

My computer crashed. I don't know what caused the crash.

I tried System Restore up to the previous 4 restore points, but it didn't work. I ran System Recovery with the recovery disks I burned when I purchased the computer, but it froze up at 1% on Reinstalling Original content. I am currently running the System Restore from the recovery partition on the computer, but it is freezing up again at the same spot.

HELP! What might this mean? What suggestions do you have?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium (well, I WAS running it).

I think it might be a little more than a system crash. How old is the laptop and have you had any problems prior to this?

Hi cblwolf, welcome to the board.

This seems to be HDD related before more info is provided by you such as error codes... Are you able to boot up after the crash? Are you able to boot up window now? No? If you are able to get into safe mode, run chkdsk and memtest to see if HDD or rams are at fault. There could be bad mother board or graphic module it is hard to say.

Hope this helps.
Bruce

Thanks for your replies!

Norm, I purchased the laptop in April. The only problem I've ever had with the laptop was the constant freezing up of IE7. I was running IE7 when it crashed. I do have the service plan (including accidental). The only thing it doesn't cover is software, data backup, and viruses.

Bruce, I can't get to anything other than the HP Recovery Manager. There are options to check the Windows Partition, the Recovery Partition, and something else (can't remember what right at the moment because I started it). When I went to check the Windows partition, it went into chkdsk. It is working right now. It said it replaced "bad clusters" in several files and is now checking free space and is going very slowly. It is progressing, but has been going for a few hours now.

Hi cblwolf, few hrs of free space checking is little too long. Can you go head and do a system recovery via HP Recovery Manager to the original satisfactory state? If not, it must be the HDD or something related. Looking at your service plan, your computer is covered because your computer is crashed, system restore via Recovery Manager failed and chkdsk failed.

I would still backup my data and take advantage of that Warranty...

"Bad Clusters" is a clear indication of
(A) System crash, where Vista has corrupted files, OR
(B) a faulty or failing HDD.

In a failing HDD subsequent scans will reveal different errors. As your scan is taking so long you could be pretty sure the disk is corrupted, ie failing or failed.
Before you do any more, try to back up your data, if you haven't already. If the disk is on the way out the more you do to it the less chance there is of any data recovery.
