lately i have been trying to run dban on this new pc i got. It is a dell inspiron 546. I downloaded dban and burned it to my cd using daemom tools lite to image it. Now when i try to set my boot priority to cd it doesnt work, and the options/setup menu i have is not like the ordinary ones you see on most youtube videos about this subject. It looks exactly like this:

i tried putting that cd/dvd option at #1 but still nothing works and it just boots normally. Please help, did i burn my cd wrong or am i not using the correct settings?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I think you need to be setting the boot options in the BIOS, not the CMOS.

OK so i looked into it and the menu i showed above is the one i should be using. It's the only menu that shows hard drive/cd/ boot priority etc. I think i may have burned the disc incorrectly i will retry that.

Are you able to try the disk on another machine? Or able to try another boot able CD? Possibly a Vista Install disc or start-up repair?

It may be the image itself that was not burned correctly.

Josh :)

i dont have the repair disc, otherwise i would have used it. And if you do get the disc with your pc, the start-up repair isnt available for you. I just dont know what the problem is, i tried reburning the disc multiple times. The disc is fine and i have no doubt i burned it correctly using tutorials. Thnakyou for trying to help but im soo frustrated because problems like this always occur when it involves a pc. ALWAYS

CMOS = BIOS.
And yes you just need to set cd as first boot. I' betting you didn't properly burn dban

You need to make sure that you burnt the disk iso to the cd so it extracted the files out and not just the iso to the cd.

thank you guys for the help. I was wondering, i tried putting dban on my usb, is there a specific way to burn that too? Because i tried starting my pc from usb, and that didn't work out either.

Btw, i did burn it correctly, i used an imageburner and the files were extraced, i see them now on my disc as i open it.

I assume your running Vista, Sp2. When you boot, you should be able to see the whole POST. Normally, you get to the BIOS when the POST starts by hitting DEL (delete key).

Since you put dlan on a USB drive, you would have to make the USB the first boot option.

If you have a UEFI system, you would need to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS.

i wanna thank you guys for all your help but i have another problem. Idk what i did the first time to get my cd to boot first, but now thats all it does. Idk what happend, i did exactly what i was doing before and it magically worked. Now i cant get it to recognize my hard drive as a boot device, it boots up and says "no boot device detected". I didnt mess with my bios settings too bad, and if i did anything wrong, i just reset to defaults.

What is your boot priority? Also, do you have a CD/DVD that is bootable in the drive at all?

Josh :)

You should have a option at start to have a "boot menu" at this menu you choose HDD, optical or usb to boot from. On my Dell it's F12 while in POST.
