Hello,

I'll explain this thebest I can and as much detail as i can too.

When booting up my acer aspire 5536 laptop, i received the following error messages:

PXE-E61 Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF Exitng Broadcom PXE ROM
Operating System no found.

To remedy this I tried the Norton Bootable Rescue Disk which did nothing.

I looked online using another laptop an founf I could download an Acer Recovery Disk which I used and has restored windows, however....

There are 2 User Accounts which are still there and when i click on the admin user account it says "Preparing your Desktop" and after 5 or so minutes loads up what should be te usual desktop but nothig is there, no start button, icons, only my mouse cursor. When I load up the second user accont it quickly dispays "Preparing your Desktop" the logs off.

I can use the restore disk to get the command prompt and I have tried the automatic start up repair without sucess.

If I'm not mistaken I'm sure windows WAS on C: but now reports to being on D: and I think this may be causing the issue

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Kind Regards
Chris

Hello

Try booting into safe mode here it the tutorial...

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/123496-safe-mode.html

When is safe mode then try to do a system restore not a factory restore here's how...

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66971-system-restore.html

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/194765-system-recovery-options.html

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html

This should help you restore your system without losing any documents but I would run the following first...

1. Run a full updated security scan using your internet security.

2. Download and run a full scan using malewarebytes here's the link, free version..

Malwarebytes

Make sure there are no virus's or malware in your computer or everything you do will be pointless...

Good Luck and if you still have problems after this please post back and we will help you.

Hello not good news I have asked another forum expert and they think the only thing to do in this case is a total strip down and reinstall.

I will continue to look for a another way for you.

Hi,

How much experience have you got regarding rebuilding PC's?

How many HDD's have you got on the system?

STOP NOW! If you are unsure.

Otherwise. If you are sure that you have only ever had one HDD & one partition in device manager, explorer & you are sure that you do NOT have a recovery partition, then delete partitions "C" & "D" during recovery.
This will rebuild the system back to "C" from the DVD/ CD during the recovery process.

CAUTION: -

Systems have hidden partitions for system recovery so only delete IF you are sure!

Now on saying all that, I am not sure your HDD is working.

Does your HDD show up in the BIOS?
Have you removed it & refitted it?
Does you HDD work in a caddy on another PC?

The more information you can provide the more help we can offer. OK?

Hello,

There is only one HDD. I am on the understanding that as it is an Acer and no Windows disk came with the system, there will be a hidden partition for recovery purposes?

The hard drive works fine and wndows will load to te account logon screen. It is just now an issue trying to get into windows as the accounts do not let me, see my original post.

Hi,

Boot into the recovery partition & delete the two partitions "C" & "D". Now select the un-allocated space & the recovery will create a new "C" partition to install the system on.

No,

The recovery partition remains hidden when in recovery mode. You have stated that you have both "C & "D". So, delete "C" & "D" that is listed when selecting destination drive in recovery. then select the un-allocated space as the destination for Windows. OK?

Hello,

I just read this thread over; I suspect a hardware issue is coming into play, but keep in mind this is not a certainty.

First thing, you'll need to mark your Windows partition as active. That should be the C drive. See here: Partition - Mark as Active - Windows 7 Forums

In order to do that, you'll need to have a repair disc. See here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html

Next, run a startup repair. I don't have the Vistax64 link handy, but the SevenForums link is the same: Startup Repair - Windows 7 Forums

As for hardware diagnostics, I suggest you start with the hard drive. I recommend SeaTools for DOS.

Also run Memtest86: RAM - Test with Memtest86+ - Windows 7 Forums

Could you take a picture of the BSOD screen, and post it here? That may help us determine whether hardware or software is the cause.

That works, thanks. :)

Startup Repair is the same for Vista and Seven, if it ever comes up again.
