No I can't log on in safe mode either.

When I press my user name it says Welcome and then just goes back to my user name again.

Then try starting it in safe mode with command prompt and type the command "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and leave a space between "sfc" and /)

Hope this helps...

It doesn't even get to the command prompt because it's still stuck in the logon screen.
I can't do anything.

Then in that case do you have the vista cd?

Yes, and I already tried to repair it but I haven't made a restore point or backup image so it didn't work. It doesn't even detect a problem.

So now I decided I will try to upgrade to Windows 7 but I can't do it from the Installation DVD so if anybody knows how to do it without actually being in Windows.

Did that and in the command prompt it said "Windows Resources could not perform the requested operation"

What if I just install a fresh version of 7 over Vista will it erase all my stuff or will it just not keep the settings

When installing windows 7, it will ask you which partition it should be installed. If you choose C: (assuming C: was your former vista system partition) it will ask if you want to clean install or keep the old files (the files will be in a folder name "windows.old"). Choose keep files then continue installing windows 7.
