Help-lost internet

I lost internet about 7 days ago. Charter tech said modem is good. My son's laptop MAC can access internet through wireless-g 2.4 ghz Linksys. Out of the blue last week when I try to log on with Internet Explorer, I get Internet Explorer cannot display the web page. When I diagnose connection problem, 1) the cable is plugged in to local area connection, 2)automatically got new IP settings, 3) reset modem and router. I get the red X between unidentified network and internet. I have tried many suggestions from things I have read online, and this is a last ditch effort before I throw in the towel. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

richc,
thanks for your response. unfortunately, 1 of the "fixes" i found must have had me uncheck drive c in system protection, because all my earlier restore points are gone.
p.s. i do have webroot and the scan 8/28 didn't show up anything strange. also, i had previously done a couple system restores (1 went back at least 3 days prior to the problem). so does that help at all? again, thanks for any help.

Also, try booting into safe mode and tell us if it works then.

After days of trying this, that and the other, here was the solution: I disabled firewall on Webroot Internet Security. I enabled Windows firewall, and internet works again. Maybe there was an update in Webroot that messed everything up? I know malwarebytes is recommended, but should I also keep Webroot antivirus, antispyware active? Thanks.

Suggested by most at this forum is
Microsoft Security Essentials and a once a week scan with the free Malwarebytes.
If you want webroot, you can use that for real time protection and use the free malwarebytes for the once a week scan.
