Help? Can only connect with IE

I have a Toshiba laptop satellite running vista...

I have had some connection problems lately..

Firefox wont connect, p2p transfer software like limewire, torrent software.. etc, my AIM messenger wont connect.

the only thing that will work is internet explorer.. i checked my firewall and such, and nothing appears to be wrong..

what do you suggest??

Should i partition my hdd??

Partitioning your hard drive isn't going to do anything except waste space and time.

Do you use proxies?

Chances are, something happened in the OS to change port settings and the port your programs proxie through is either offline or some other program has commandeered it. To mess around with that stuff, you need to get into Device Manager or something: I dunno, I'm generally stupid about computers' more complicated stuff.

Anyway, to find out if you do use proxies in Firefox, go to menu "Tools," "Options," then to tab "Advanced," then to tab "Network" and finally to "Settings."

Select "no proxies." Okay it and then close Firefox. Give it a five-Mississippi count. Open it up and see if you're Internet's still down.

I ttied the proxy stuff, that didn't change anything.
