Do i need to download drivers for this? I've checked off all the appropriate boxes in the sound setup but it still will not let me select a 5.1 setup. Its is optical out to my dd/dts/PLIIx reciever. Not sure why this is so diffucult. Im using an ASUS p5q-e motherboard.

Hi Malakei, I am not expert in this but did you connect all 6 out put to the 6 inputs at you A/V receiver? If you are using the computer as a decoder, you will have to connect you output signals to the in's in the preamp level . Sorry, if I am making it more confuse.

Hope this helps.

No its connected via a Digital Optical cable into the back of the reciever. so theres only 1 cable and its connected. maybe i should try a different optical port on my reciever but i doubt that will work

Yea im using a toslink, finally got it to work 5.1 on power DVD had to configure it while the movie was playing. Still wont let me setup the speakers as 5.1 for the spdif settings in soundmax or in games tho. So frusterating, but at least its 5.1 for movies that was my big piddle off

May be little more tweaking on the receiver end? The way my hook up is using the A/V receiver as a multichannel preamp and amp. All the decoding is done on the pc so what ever sound effects coming out of the sound card is being amplified.

Yeah i suppose i could do that but then it would be on the pc end if i were to change it to decode at the pc. Its not an issue of it showing up at the reciever. It won't allow me to select 5.1 anywhere in the sound settings in vista. wont let me set it to 5.1 speakers in the control panel even after I checked off that the reciever does DTS processing. Im pretty sure its a driver or software issue but maybe ill have to contact asus by phone to get a better answer.

I really like to know how exactly to get it work. I just find out my X-Fi card on my game rig has a toslink output. May be I can try it out sometime. The one I had hookup is a Adigy 2 on my other rig.

Usually seperate hdaudio cards will have the appropriate software. Im starting to regret buying a board with onboard hdaudio already. Might just have to buy a seperate card which is another hundred bux. Pretty stupid since i think its a vista issue not my board.

You need to install the Realtek HD audio drivers and program, then change your audio output to optical and configure your program to output the 5.1 signal.

Go to asus' web page, they have all you need to get the digital sound up and running on the computer.

Will the Realltek HDaudio drivers work? I dont think its a Realtek HDaudio chipset. Hence why the board comes with non realtek drivers. I might try the different drivers anyways to see if i have any luck

My mistake, I specified the wrong chipset. You need the soundmax drivers from the Downloads section of the asus website
