Having problems with x64 at startup.

Hi, I bought an HP Laptop from Circuit City before they closed down, model number I think was 1020dv7-us or something like that. Not that I think it's very important right now. There's 2 problems I have been having lately that have really been bothering me because i can't even use this computer and i need it for college. So here goes the first problem.

I got it in September and I had no problems up until the end of January. One night it just wouldn't shut down. I would click shut down and it would go through the entire process until the black screen, and it stay on all night on that black screen until i woke up the next morning and realized what had happened. So as anyone would, I held down the power button until it shut down, let it sit for a couple minutes then turned it back on and went and watched tv for a few minutes being that I do not have a password set and it takes some time for vista to load up all the way. So it ran the boot process and right before the windows logo comes up and the startup sound plays, it gets to that black screen with the cursor. So when I came back into my room about 5-10 minutes later it was still on THAT black screen. So I walked out and came back in 10 miuntes, still on the black screen. Held power button to shut down, started it up and it prompted me to run in safe mode of normal, at first I chose normal and it did the same thing a bunch of times so the i finally chose safe mode andit came right up. I backed up everything, and did a full factory recovery. Fully updated the system again and it ran fine for about three days until the second problem I've been having arose.

Second problem happens after startup completes and i can see my desktop. A window pops up and in the title bar says: Windows Defender. In the window the message reads: "Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused this programs service to stop." then about how to troubleshoot it and help and support and to restart the computer which didn't help (4 times). So then, I had then opened control panel and realized that this one apparent windows defender problem was causing a string of problems within windows because the control panel window opened but nothing appeared for two minutes and then it closed itself out. I also could not open a few other windows applications. I tried system restore with this problem and it only worked for about 2 days, then the problem occured again. So again i did a full factory recovery and the first problem happened again on the 4th day, another full recovery later the second problem, and so on.

So here i am on this godforsaken laptop with the windows defender problem occuring again, and now I've kind of figured it can't be something I'm doing because each time these problems occured, the only thing i put on this computer was firefox, ca internet security and all important and recommended windows updates, no driver updates or new drivers. So i'm wondering if anyone can help me with this. Could it be a certain windows update? or something else.

Also, since this is my first post i'll also introduce myself. My name is Doug and i'm pretty big into gaming on the computer and Xbox. I also ride BMX, like the xgames kind. Not where you race around on a track.

What happened and or was loaded when the first problem occurred?

Nothing was loaded, I just clicked shut down and it didn't shut down. I held the power button to turn it off and then started it up again. When it booted it just stayed on a black screen with a cursor in the middle which you could move around and that's it nothing else happened.

Hmmm, seems like you are suffering from the same bug others are getting with a black screen at start up. I get it on occassions. Reboot and it usually takes care of it for me. Some say to get the 64 bit driver for your monitor but being you have a laptop.....perhaps HP has a monitor driver for your laptop? Also, check HP's forums perhaps someone has posted the same problem and hopefully a solution.

Yeah I tried rebooting and the same thing happened several times it's not that I just get a black screen it's like the system boots up but vista doesn't come on at all and it did it while shutting down too. However, I can get on it in safe mode but i don't feel like running safe mode my whole life.

I'm on it right now so that's not the problem I'm having at the moment. The one occuring now is that window pops up with the message about windows defender failing to initialize. It says to reboot and I do but it just happens again. When i get that error i try to go to control panel and that won't open, nor will windows picture viewer. So it seems that the windows defender error is also affecting other applications.

Did this already.

"Note If you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" sections but you have not uninstalled Windows Defender through Programs and Features, you may be receiving this error message because of a different issue. The steps in this article address only issues in which Windows Defender has been removed from the system."

tried system restore back to first boot, works for a day then i get it again. i have no clue what's causing it to fail, it's failing at startup as soon as you see the desktop.

Oh wow. I didn't even think of that. I just went into msconfig and changed it so it doesn't start at startup. I'll see what happens. Thanks.

10-4. Let me know. I shut mine down, at least I do not see it. I use Avast for antivirus and spyware. I keep off suspect sites if you know what I mean. Once a month I will open Defender and run a scan for fun I guess.

Worked. I have a lot on my desktop for protection right now but I guess I can start putting it all on here now that I don't have to restore it haha. Computer Associates Internet security suite for 64 bit systems, spyware blaster, and ad-aware. works pretty good, i never really get anything bad on it. usually just tracking cookies which is normal.

If I have that problem again where I can't shut down or start up I'll try calling hp see what they know about it.

Thanks a lot.

Hi doug,

Sounds to me like Windows Defender Service is set to manual instead of automatic.

Type services.msc in the start search box - open it when it pops up.

Scroll down to Windows Defender Service, rt click, select Properties, set to Automatic, Apply, OK . Then click Start.

SIW2 is correct and you should attempt what he suggests. The reason? Something along the way went crazy. Now that you have it turned off and have found it is the source of your problems, time to find out how to correct it. Do what SIW2 has suggested. If all is good, you then now have another layer of protection pulling for you and your original problem is now solved.

I did a follow up on what SIW2 posted on the services. Mine shows automatic. Mine runs fine with Avast. Check it out and correct this if it is set to manual.
