i have a maxtor 250gb external harddrive, this morning it was workin perfectly now computer will not recognise it as being there even though the light is on, i have tried, unplugging and plugging back in lots of times but still not working, any ideas please

With it plugged in and powered up how does it show up in Disk Management ? ?

Check in Device Manager see if it is showing.
Uninstall it if it is, then restart.
