Hard Drives Noise

Hi,

I just switched to Vista (32Bit) and I have a question about my hard drives.

The main hard drive I'm using is a Western Digital 500GB Sata II. The hard drive works fine and has no problems.

My second and third hard drives are 2 x Hitachi 500GB Sata II. The problem is every 5-10 minutes they make the noise as if they are turning on even when I'm not accessing them. In XP this didn't happen, is this normal in Vista? I turned power options to high performance.

The Hitachi drives still work fine but I'm wondering why this noise happens? In XP this only happened when I turned on the PC.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi ConsoleKing and Welcome to the forum :)
I ran into this myself. Turns out the power config on Vista was turning off my drives if they were idle for a certain time period. Try this:

Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Notice the power plan you have then below it click on Change Power Settings > Change ADvanced power settings > Then look on the list for Hard Disk and tell it to Never turn your drives off. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the help I found the option to do this, it was set at 20 minutes no wonder this kept happening.

Say I leave this option on but leave my pc idle is there a way I can always keep the main OS hard drive active and not to shut down?
