This is because Vista is creating a Restore point to back up your main programs and services, so if you mess up you can go to a restore point and take it back to that point in time to fix up anything that you have done. Vista also creates a Restore point if you install or uninstall a program. you can right click on your hard drive in my computer and use the cleanup tool and then click on more options and chose to delete all but the most recent Restore point. I do this on occasion and sometimes get about 10Gigs back.

Hi rohinzbluesbox and welcome to the forum

This is probably due to System Restore (SR). By default, SR uses upto 10% of the total capacity of your hard disk, so if its total capacity is 80GB then SR will use upto 8GB. You can change the settings for SR by following this Tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76227-system-restore-disk-space.html. SR automatically creates a new restore point every 24 hours or when certain software is installed.
Normal computer use also uses up disk capacity as files are created and deleted. This is more noticeable if you manually delete documents and shortcuts. These are not immediately deleted, but instead end up in the recycle bin. Only when the bin is emptied do you get the space back.
