Hard drive install

I have a new computer Vista. I want to install another Drive. I have a Western Digital that I took off my old computer. I tried to install it and I get a error OS? I tried all of the pin setting I think. Still will not work. I have a Parsario Compaq sr5601p

Welcome to the forums.

Need more info. What exactly does the error say? Also what kind of drive are you trying to install?

One more thing, If you click on the 'My System Specs' link at the bottom left of one of your posts, you can fill in all the info about your computer that you can. You can look at mine and others to see what kind of info is helpful.

It may not be able to read the IDE drive. You may need to mess with that a bit. I know i did.

Hello milan75,

When you install a new sata drive, you have to go into the bios and make it active. I don't know exactly where that will be in your bios, but it should be in there. There may be several so you need to know which one you attached it to.

I am thinking that the BIOS has the IDE drive as the Primary drive and the SATA as the 2nd drive and since the IDE drive was loaded with an OS for that pc, it doesn't recognize it on this one.

You must go into the Bios and change it so the SATA (your primary drive before the add-on) is the one that will boot first and the IDE will be like a slave.

The sata drive on my computer came with it. The one I want to install is the Western Digital EDIE as the storage drive.

Ah I see. Same idea though, just go into BIOS and set the EIDE as master, or first
choice in boot options. Should set it straight.

Ok so you want the SATA drive to be your OS drive right? And it is now? If you do not have the EIDE drive hooked up can you still boot into vista??

If you can, then go into BIOS (after hooking the EIDE back in) and select boot from SATA (master). If you get the error, then try reformatting the EIDE (providing you do not need anything off the drive)

I find this problem odd because I have multiple OS installed on mutiple HDDs, and I can even see the OS from another OS. It should work as is.... But try the reformat.
