Hammering sound when exiting a program

I have Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 531. All my research indicates I have the latest Realtek driver installed (Device Manager reports version 6.0.1.6343 dated 4/06/2011).

When exiting many programs that have an exit sound associated, I get a rapid hammering or drumbeating sound that lasts for several seconds and then stops.

Any suggestions, anyone? This is really starting to bug me.

Thanx,

Hi welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear of your problems.
I recently had to do a restore on a dell 1545, this was having sound problems, not identical to yours, nevertheless, a sound that should not be there.
I found the use of the built in Dell Support Centre helpful, going through all the hardware & updating.
You should have this on your computer, if not download from dell support.
Some of the parts are generic to dell, which is worth remembering.
By the time I had finished the process of the support/help centre the sound/audio as ok>
I hope the info may help.
Thank you.

You will have obviously checked the sound system for faults.
I wonder if you had tried the built in DirectX Diagnostic Tool?

Here are some details for you, hope they can assist in your problem:-

I tried both suggestions, and neither identified a problem. I must say the Dell Support Center looks like it may come in handy in the future. Hard to believe I didn't know about it before.

Any other ideas will be muc appreciated.

Shame the ideas did not work! Mmm?
Will have to research a little more, if you don't mind?
The Dell centre has been updated recently, and is now quite a useful tool to have at your disposal.
Have you downloaded yet?
The DirectXDiagnostics, gave no clue to the problem?
Now, device manager indicates latest driver is installed?
Did you check with Realtek ?
Realtek
Maybe worth checking.
